OS4 and PPC hardware...
« on: December 09, 2005, 08:50:33 PM »
I have been reading all the posts about OS4 and hardware...  I've read so much that I can't remember all the different configurations discussed.  I really like what I see of OS4.

Question 1: Would OS4 run on a MAC Mini?

Question 2: Can an A1200 be fitted with a PPC board and, if so, what speed PPC board would you recommend, and with that said, could you run OS4 on it?

Thanks in advance.

P.S. Maybe Amiga.org could start an FAQ section dedicated to OS4?

1.  No.

2.  Yes.  Right now the only option is the Phase5/DCE BlizzardPPC.  Soon (hopefully) the ACK PowerVixxen LT.  Both will eventually support OS4.  For speed, basicly the fastest you can find and afford.

Time to move on.  Bye Amiga.org.  :(

Right now the ONLY systems OS4 runs on (publicly) are the AmigaONE line of computers.  Unfortunately they're no longer being made.  However Trokia should be putting out their own systems (Amy'05) soon (hopefully).

In Beta, OS4 runs on any PPC accelerator available for classic Amigas.  When OS4 goes final (also hopefully soon), it should be able to use it on any PPC Amiga.  As far as I know, there are no "minimum" requirements for OS4 in terms of speed.  I'm sure OS4 will be quite speedy even on the lowest spec'ed PPC accelerator.  However, obviously, the faster the better.

As someone else has already stated, there is work on a new PPC accelerator for the A1200 called the PowerVixxen (I'm praying for an A4000 version to put into my system).  That should run OS4 as well but when this card will come out is unknown.

Unofficially, there are hints that OS4 is running on other systems.  I hope this is true but who knows. :-?

Thanks so much for the straight up answers!   :-D

I think I'll start looking for a gently used A1200.   :-P

Theoretically it can run on any PPC hardware, provided someone makes drivers for it.
On practice it's unlikely it will run on the Mac anytime soon (I wouldn't be surprised if someone does it in the longer term, but it wouldn't be official).

If your considering buying an A1200 with the idea that you will run OS4 on it then perhaps my article I wrote about OS4 on the A1200 might be of interest to you.

Its on a website I run, which is IntuitionBase.com, you can go straight to the article by following: http://intuitionbase.com/static.php?section=en_OS4_Classics
