I'm not sure why everyone is acting appalled or shocked.  You knew it was going to be pricy ! ! !  Its about $200 cheaper than I figured though.  :shock:

Because all the people who are complaining are the people who always complain, and would complain whatever it was. I don't think it's much of a secret that practically all the people commenting on this thread don't like OS4 or Hyperion or whatever.

I am a prospective buyer of the X1000, and JJ raises some interesting points here.

It is a lot of money, but truth be told, it is a couple of hundred under what my absolute max was.  However, I would like an official reply to the points JJ raises before I consider pulling the trigger.

I would imagine they've just not finished the drivers for the onboard yet... not something I'd worry about.  Best prioritise the parts of the OS that you can't just stick a supported card in for.

Speaking for myself, I'd MUCH rather have an X1000 that needed an ethernet card, than have no X1000 for a few months while they finish the drivers.

So you need to use a plug-in card for a bit instead of the on-board? Would it stop me enjoying it? Nope.

Work on the critical drivers, THEN work on the optional ones.

1 - the drivers aren't done.  Sorry, don't release it then.  All due respect, if the drivers are not there for the baseboard, you dropped the ball already bringing this to market.  Would you buy a PC from a store if it had a sticker saying "MB NIC will work  in 2-4 months, buy a PCIe card if you want to use the Internet!".  Fair enough if the drivers are not there, don't put a band aid on a bullet wound and sell a kludge of a product.  If you are not ready, you aren't ready.

We're not talking about a PC though, we're talking about a brand new system with far fewer resources available to it.

If you don't want it until the network chipset is supported, then great - don't buy it. But you'll be the one missing out while the rest of us enjoy the system.

If it's designed to run OS4 you'd think they'd have working OS4 drivers...

The computer is designed to run OS4 - the chipset isn't.
They will have picked hardware which they know they can write drivers for, but someone's still got to write the drivers, and that takes time. Hyperion aren't a big company, they can't do everything all at once.

I wish everyone else felt like you. Unfortunately there are people who just want to see AmigaOS 4 fail, for one reason or another.
