AOS4 and Efika at BAC (Belgian Amiga Club)
« on: January 15, 2007, 03:04:36 PM »
Last week-end, AmigaOS4 final and the EFIKA were demonstrated at the monthly BAC (Belgian Amiga Club) meeting, behind some nice Amiga folks. Some Hyperion and Genesi guys came to Zwijndrecht to show "AmigaOS4 final" and the Efika motherboard in action !

Interesting news, the key AOS4 developer present received an Efika motherboard and "our compliments and a pledge from us to help them move from u-boot to our firmware" (quote from BBRV blog).

@TheMagicM

Is that the part about the "key developer for OS4"? My translation "some techie involved in OS4 came to play with some of our hardware."

It seems to me that BBRV and Amiga Inc are going to have to mend alot of bridges befor AI lets a license loose for hardware Genesi is involved with.

I could read that article as a nose tweek from BBRV to Amiga Inc. I don't see it as change or even hope of a change in the current Efika/OS4 relationship. But I am the major pesimist.

it seems as though AI is the bottleneck here.  But a OS4 developer doesnt mean OS4 will be running on EFIKA.  It could simply mean a OS4 developer was there to see the EFIKA and bought one, BB delivered it in person.

Or it could mean.. ON SCHEDULE AND ROCKIN!!!  OS4 2 YER DEKSTOP!111 rawk.

As far as I see it reads OS4 and Efika in action but not OS4 in action on Efika. I doubt Hyperion could get license for Efika or other way around.

There is nothing of interest here.  There is no licence there is no OS4 for Efika.

That's alright, probably most of us say the same thing about the Sam mobo and OS4, not going to happen because of licensing issues.

Personally i appreciate that OS4 dev could drop an eye and play with Efika ! Even if Hyperion wouldn't license any motherboard (SAM, Efika, ..) for OS4.

In France (mostly Pegasos users for historic reasons), the Pegasos dev Corto (Pointrider, Wow, last Songplayer..) use too A1/AOS4 apparently : he's code for all Amiga "sects" : classic, MorphOS, AOS4, etc... I love this guy !

@Dammy

The difference is that the people behind Sam are prepared to talk to Amiga about licencing.

I have been at that meeting as I am a happy member of the Belgian Amiga Club. There was only one guy from Hyperion at the meeting but he is (almost) always present there. The guy with the Efika told us clearly that at this stage only Linux will work and MorphOS will also work when it reaches V1.5, so not a single word about OS4 ...

Oh please, like Genesi wouldn't cut a deal with Amiga Inc to get OS4 on EFIKA?  Get real.  Problem both for Genesi and the SAM folks, Amiga Inc requires a minimum gross sales of $500k prior to being considered as a partner.  Of the two, AFAIK, only Genesi would come close to that minimum threshold Amiga Inc has set.

U-Boot is "Free" and minimal.

Genesi's OF implementation used to be derived from CodeGen's product if I remember right, and even if they offer it for zero cost I doubt their license carries no strings -- of course they'd love to see it adopted.

The elegant way to do this would be to bang out implementation(s) U-Boot can load and hand it to the users (assuming any more U-Boot hardware is coming) or (gasp) sell it for a pittance.  Then it could 'win' -- or who cares if it 'wins' if it turns a profit? -- on its merits without the goad of pitching an "Open" standard whose sole available implementation (for what, disappointingly, is becoming the PowerPC ghetto) is presumed proprietary.

Does anyone still think it's a good idea to store essential driver code and configuration data on media that isn't easily updated, exchanged, or replaced?  When you can probably go out and buy a gig of Flash with standard form factor and interface at the corner store for less than a pack of smokes?
