You make that sound like a BAD thing. From what I understood it was quite fast, nice to work with, and for some people had some distinct advantages over quite nice Amithlon. Neither are chopped liver - though the unresolved situations reminded me of really bad ground round comprised mainly of suet and sawdust ; }
It was not a bad idea, but it turned out to be bad in the end. The guy who did the porting for H&P left them after the project was completed and they had no one else who knew what they were doing. Worse, they failed to deliver the source code despite it supposedly being released under the GPL. The result was that bugs which showed up in UAE and JIT emulation after the project was completed were never fixed for AmigaXL the way they were for WinUAE and Amithlon. Furthermore, while QNX did offer a better range of supported hardware initially, there was no support with problems and there has been little significant driver development at OS level since.
AmigaXL was relying on QNX as a desktop environment, but QNX RTP is not aimed to satisfy the requirements of a desktop environment. It is mainly intended as a development platform.
In tests it was proven that AmigaXL was slower than WinUAE which in turn was slower than Amithlon. Taking the two UAE ports (AmigaXL and WinUAE) into direct comparison, there is little to recommend AmigaXL, which comes second on price, speed, hardware compatibility, support and development.
