VMWAROS LIVE! Requirements.....
« on: May 22, 2008, 03:17:42 PM »
Hi all, I'm taking a look at the VMWAROS LIVE! site and this seems like a near ready OS. I'm a little confused by the verbiage on the site. I assume that this is a virtual ware version... therefore, would this require an existing OS, like Windows, to install VMWAROS LIVE! ???

It almost sounds like I can run the live CD and simply install VMWAROS LIVE! without an existing OS. Is taht possible?

Also, the site states that the Traveller webbrowser in included...  how far alnog is that? Can you actually surf the web with it?

I would really like to try this out but would like to simply install it to wiped drive. Any help is greatly appeciated.

Yep, you can do a stand-alone install...I have it setup like that...from the live CD.

Beware though, nightly updates kill your live CD installation if you try using the built-in updater. I've tried at least ten and every time it dies, so just install and leave it.

Sound? Oh sound, what a PITA...there are drivers for all sorts of chipsets, but the only one that seems to work is the Soundblaster Live! card.

Fun to mess around with, but at this stage it isn't a useable operating system unfortunately.

Oh, and the whole "compatible with Amiga 3.1" mess...they are years away from that. Not a single native Amiga 3.1 compatible application I have tried to date has worked.

Ehmz it dosent mean you can run AmigaOS Native applications at all, so if you have tried that its no wonder it failed.

Well, I have it installed and I must say it's beautiful! First things first... I set the IPConfig to auto...  is there a way to "see" if the system obtained an IP address? Also, how do I fire up Traveller? Or, is there another browser already on the system that is functional? I already knew that AROS does not support AmigaOS Native applications. Can't wait for emulation!

I would like to use the OS to surf the web, get email, play some games, and create and print some documents (letters, spreadsheet, etc...)

Also, If I can get those things to work, I would like to install the OS on older hardware and sell the machines in my store and on the web. I havn't read what the licensing requirements would be for that though. :rtfm:

Yes it is.

Traveller isn't finished yet, unfortunately the developer has stopped because of personal reasons. What is included isn't really usable yet (actually it is intended as a demo of the Webkit engine, not as a usable browser).

Soundblaster Live! is highly recommended, works nicely in my Aros machine. For networking, consider to get card that has a Realtek 8029 chipset, it also works fine.

UAE integration isn't there yet, but it will be one day (hopefully). Until that has happened, you'll have to stick to applications that are ported to Aros. There are quite some interesting programs by now like Dopus, Simplemail, Wookiechat and Hivelytracker to name a few.

Yes, just open a shell and type: "ifconfig eth0".

Cool, OK... Did not obtain an IP address automatically. So attemting manual config. I think auto didn't work 'cause my network default gateway is 192.168.0.1

I entered an IP Address in the network dialog box but must have did something wrong as the OS freaked out then kind of did a soft reboot on me. Now I can't seem to get back to the same screen dialog to re-enter the IP info. Dang, I'm kinda lost here.

I think this is going to be a great OS to offer in my store when the browser is completed!

Is it possible to run VMWAROS on Intel-based Mac Mini without installing Windows first?

I doubt that it can be installed natively because AFAIK Aros needs a PC bios (which Macs don't have). However, you might be able to install/run it as a virtual machine e.g. within Parallels or Qemu.

Hmmm, just can't get an address. I'm using the Prefs/IPConfig routine. But, I noticed that on VMwAROS the TCP/IP stack is launched at startup. If I go into Networking/Stacks folder I "view" the network settings but don't all match what I changed in the IPConfig routine. Any thoughts? My Default Gateway 192.168.0.1 (not 192.168.1.1)   :-?

You have to edit "SYS:Prefs/Env-Archive/AROSTCP/db/interfaces", not "Extras:networking/stacks/AROSTCP/db/interfaces", it is a bit confusing... Or just use ConfigIP in Prefs. What network card do you have? eth0 showing up in ifconfig doesn't actually mean it is working.

OK, I yanked out the NIC as I had tried every NIC card config listed. It's a no name somethin-or-other. Will a Linksys PCI Etherfast work with one of the pre-configs? I'll try it and let you know....   :-P

Depends on the chipset. You may check this site to find out which hardware ist supported. As I already said, I had good results with a Realtek 8029. They are pretty easy to find and cheap.

Yup, RealTek's are good. I used to have a bunch of them but used 'em all up in machines I sold long ago. I do have some 3Com's at home I'll try tomorrow (I almost threw those old 3Com cards in the trash!) I'm about to try the Linksys but doubt it will work. Results to follow...  hahaha.....

One thing I don't get is where to change the subnet mask. When I run the IFCONFIG command, it shows 0.255.255.255. Should be 255.255.255.0   :-?
