Version 3.0
« on: December 09, 2011, 07:00:05 PM »
I lost track.
I thought that after amigadave showed morphos 3.0 beta at Amiwest2011 on his powerbookg4, the latest version was to be released.

What happened?

I have a g4 powerbook 1.67 and would like to retry morphos.
I did install 2.6 on my kids emac and mac mini...but they took back their computers. (sigh)

I recall hearing "December," but I don't know that they gave a specific date.
Computers: Amiga 1200, DEC VAXStation 4000/60, DEC MicroPDP-11/73
Synthesizers: Roland JX-10/MT-32/D-10, Oberheim Matrix-6, Yamaha DX7/FB-01, Korg MS-20 Mini, Ensoniq Mirage/SQ-80, Sequential Circuits Prophet-600, Hohner String Performer

It's supposed to be out before the end of December... I recently bought a Powerbook 1.67 GHz (A1139 model) to get ready for MOS 3.0 xperience besides my Peggy!

Cheers,

Like others have stated, it is supposed to be released before the end of this year, but there is no specific date set for it's release that I have seen anywhere.

It is also possible that it could be released today, or that it could be late and not be released until a month or two from today.  You know how unpredictable software development can be.  Most likely they will release it later this month, when they said they would.

Everyone should realize that support for the G4 PowerBooks will be a "Work in Progress" for a while and not all features will be finished with the initial release of MorphOS3.0.  It might be 3.1, 3.2, or even 3.3 before the MorphOS Dev. Team is satisfied with their work on drivers for the hardware included in the G4 PowerBooks, such as 3D graphic acceleration, PCMCIA/Cardbus slot support, Ethernet driver support, or any number of other optimizations that they are working on.  The presentation that Fab did not too long ago explained much of what is still being worked on and the fact that not all features would be completed in the initial release of MorphOS3.0.

MorphOS3.0 with support for a few models of the G4 PowerBook is a significant step forward and includes a lot of work beyond MorphOS2.7.  Many people are excited and waiting for this release.

I expect it to boost the MorphOS user base by quite a few dozen new users, as well as many existing users that will add a G4 PowerBook to their existing MorphOS compatible computer(s).

Writing drivers for undocumented hardware must be difficult and probably not much fun at times, so I have the greatest admiration for the MorphOS Development Team for taking on the task of porting MorphOS to so many undocumented Mac PPC systems.  They are a talented bunch of guys.
How are you helping the Amiga community? :)

Dave's quite right that some features may not make it into 3.0.

3D acceleration for Powerbooks (and R300 card users) probably won't happen just yet.

When it is done.

To be more precise. Team never announces official date for a simple reason: deadline sucks. Fixing bugs, polishing every aspect of the system etc take a fair amount of time.  With a deadline, you can't fix everything nicely...

Have my Power Mac on it's way to give 3.0 a try :-) Just wish they supported more video cards, there are some cheaper options (and faster) than 9000/9100/9200/9250 ;-)

There were some false rumours about release dates... it was only said "not before december", but of course people took it "in december!!!11". It's done when it's done.

"This year [2011], but not before December" is how I remember it.

I have a Radeon9800XT in my Powermac.
Currently we don't have hardware 3D acceleration for that card, but I don't really miss it (and it will come in future updates).

There has also been some talk about other, higher end cards.
But 3.0 focuses on improving R200 performance (I don't think R300 3D will even be included).

Things do advance, but with a limited number of developers, the rate is somewhat slow.

Well, since 2012 is being announced "The year of the 3", I guess Dec 31st could be considered some kind of a deadline.
