Title: How to get 800x600 on Amiga 1200?
Post by: werfer on March 01, 2005, 02:21:54 PM
Hi there,

I am fairly new to Amiga, and have a question:

I have an Amiga 1200HD with a Blizzard 1230 IV and SCSI-Controller. The machine runs fine so far.

I have now gotten my hands onto an external Flickerfixer which looks like an Eyetech EZ-VGA, although there is no logo on it, so it might be a clone. I plugged this into my Amiga 1200 (which is running OS3.9), and added a CTX monitor on the other side.

I get a nice picture when I use MULTISCAN: PRODUCTIVITY with 640x480. Since I want to add a PCMCIA-Network-Card and get it onto the Internet, I do need 800x600. I have been trying for some time, but I cannot seem to manage it.

Does anyone have a simple step-by-step idea on how to do this??? I would be that greatful!!

Looking at this link here,

http://howtos.linux.com/howtos/Framebuffer-HOWTO-7.shtml (http://howtos.linux.com/howtos/Framebuffer-HOWTO-7.shtml)

It looks as though super72-lace - 800x600 is the only mode that will allow it, Without a graphics card.

I have heard that the scandoublers don't work with 800x600 as it's not one of the PAL modes. If your monitor supports it you may use it in interlace, but it seems like many monitors doesn't support it.

You may find screen drivers on the Aminet that gives you horizontal resolutions close to 800 pixels, about 770 if I remember right (using overscan). This should possible be the best solution for internet as 640 pixels are not enough.

Have you tried 1280x512 interlaced through the scandoubler? Haven't myself as I don't have a scandoubler, could be nice in case it works.

If you wanted to run that in anything more than 16 colours, you won't have any custom chip bandwidth left for... well anything!

That could be. But in case it works fine in 16 colours it can still be a quite good alternative for Internet, as some sites actually demands higher resoultions. Most sites however works good at 800x600, but there is just a handfull of sites that actually works with 640x480.

Just use Pal Hires and expand the screensize by using the Sys:Prefs\Overscan like Cyberstorm said. You can also try to use the special screenmode DoublePal Hires No Flicker !! This works on a vga monitor without using a scandoubler, and the screen is very stable, does not eat extra Chip Memory and is also VERY fast, certainly compared to the ultraslow Multiscan. And you can also use Overscan to expand the screensize to 723x512 or something like that ...

Oh, by the way... where do I get DoublePal Hires - I unfortunately do not have this on my machine :-(

The DoublePAL/NTSC monitors are inside STORAGE:MONITORS, just copy them to your DEVS:MONITORS

such a high res, will make the a1200 dead slow, and consume enough mem... you should go for RTG

Please take into consideration that I am new to Amiga, and in general to questions of resolution: what is RTG, and how do I get this to run....

I have a lot of memory in the 1200, and it has a 030 Turbo Card...

rtg stands for ReTargetable Graphics... you need an amiga graphics card (installed in a tower with some zorro/pci slots or use a BlizzardPPC+Bvision card) then you will be able to use resolotions like 800X600,1024X768,... @ 8bit/16bit/24bit and all these without wasting chipmem, or speed... the graphics card takes care of all the operations, and everything is much faster!
I currently use a 800X600@16bit resolution, and everything is much nicer and FAST...

I only have a desktop Amiga - I do not think there is a way of installing a separate graphics card - unless I do massive case modding, and even then I would not know how to connect the card to the mainboard :-)

I fear I momentarily have no other option but to try my best to get this 1200 to work as best as possible. I have no money at the moment (just became father!), so there is no way I could afford a tower and graphix card at the moment
:-(
