AROS on PIII-450mhz
« on: August 31, 2009, 03:25:49 AM »
Greetings,

I've recently aquired and resurrected an old HP PIII w/ 166MB RAM(have not check the MB details yet, due to lack of time), I'll probably use two of my old A4000 IDE HDD(both 240MB), and I was wondering if I can install AROS to play around with it for kicks, since I'm quite new to AROS.

Is my specs adequate enough to support/run AROS? Any suggestion,recommendation and comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks ;)

Regards,

GiZz72

I successfully booted and ran the latest DVD image about 2 months ago on an old P3 laptop with only 64MB of RAM so you should have no problems.

@nagaflas
cool! I should be good to go then. I also plan connect it online(dial-up) once I've set it all up. Is it fairly simple to do on AROS?

Thanks!

Yes, you can install bare AROS and some applications on a 240 MB hard drive, but don't be so enthusiast: much time lasted since you could use less than half gigabyte of total space on a A4000, and that space is absolutely not enough for new apps AROS is aiming at.

In a nutshell: buy a 20 Gigs hard drive and live happier.

Is that so. Well then, I do have an old 20gigs HDD. I'll just need time to transfer the data to DVD. I'll post my progress and see what AROS can do then.. cheers, Paolone! :D

I don't remember seeing a modem application with AROS.  Has there been one ported or created?

Nope. The way to connect to the Internet is via a local area network. Just plug a supported network card into your machine, and connect the AROS box to a router. If you haven't a router, you can easily share a internet connection using your every-day computer: just connect it to the Internet, and to the AROS box using a cross-ethernet cable.

Hello,

Some updates on my AROS Installation. After 2 days of searching, I finally found my AROS.ISO(AROS LIVE) archive which I've downloaded almost seven years ago. I'd had some trouble with the writer. Doing alot of work arounds, and swapping of several other cdrom drives later, I've finally burned it(not literally:lol:). I manage to install WindowsXP and NERO to do this.
booted from the CD, and behold, the "Workbench" of AROS pops up.

I'm not sure if this build would be enough to set-up AROS on my PIII? Currently the my 20Gig HDD was a windowsXP, now I've manage to set-it up using HDToolbox, but was cut short. I would probably tinker with it a little more after I get back from work.

The only way for me to download is via dial-up, which will probably take forever. I'll probably do that on my days-off. For the meantime, I left it off figuring how to use the HDToolBox properly. Cheers :D!

Regards,

I just downloaded 1.1.4.  BTW I was only getting 35-50bps on the download anyway.  Happy to burn you a CD and send it if you pay me the CD postpac and postage costs via paypal.
BTW: License wise am I allowed to distribute you a CD image?

Gertsy.

@Gertsy
Thanks for the offer, but I got that covered. ;) I've downloaded 1.1.4 to my Flash drive. Should be able to burn that quite soon. As of the moment, I'm still working on my Paypal account and slowly progressing.
