A little Brain Teaser !!!
« on: July 22, 2010, 12:20:29 AM »
Hi folks

This is a little brain teaser challenge me and my mates used to play way back in the 80's. When we all used to gather in each others bedrooms with our various Vic20's, C64's and Amiga's. While taking a break from worn out wrists and broken joysticks after playing things like Daly Thompsons Decathlon.

The challenge is quite simply and at times got to be real competitive.

Someone would write down on a piece of paper some binary code and the challenge would be to work out in your head what this would translate to and what it would do on the particular machine. Whomever got it right, got to write the next one and so on.

here's any easy one to start with... :)

What would the following binary code do on a C64

01001100 11100010 11111100

Go on give your brain a little workout :roflmao:

Franko

Correct, up to a point !

But the question remains, What would that do on a C64

This one was either "too old school", "too hard" or "too boring" (dunno which!, answers on a postcard!) :)

At least odin almost cracked it...

Ok then the binary translated into 76 226 252 as odin got correctly...

this on the good old C64 = JMP $FCE2 which would RESET THE C64 (or SYS 64738 in basic)

See... It was really quite simple.

Go on someone, now you have the idea, put up an Amiga one (I love a good challenge !!!)

Franko :)

I just read the thread for the first time - not scrolling down. I was thinking this:
"Well I don´t remember the C64-opcodes without looking them up, but I bet the first byte is a jump and the rest is the address.

"Hmm $E2FC, what´s that in decimal? .. damn is using a calculator cheating? Could it be 64738? Hmm, ah, let´s scroll down."

Maybe I can find some challenge-worthy Amiga binary, but not today ... I am not prepared for this and already a bit tired.

I've never done any programming on the C=64, but I suspected another instruction:
wasn't it that the pre-C=64 computers like the VIC20 and the PET could be blown up literally by a certain POKE instruction?
And the canary said: \'chirp\'

Nah !. That was just a fairy story put about by jealous Spectrum users at the time, cos the VIC 20 had a wopping 3Kb of ram and a real keyboard. :)

Well folks, looks like this thread was a wee wee bit too nerdy...

So I reckon I'll call it quits on this one. :)

(Thank Gawd, I hear you say...) :roflmao:

Cheers :drink:
