Lost in the tune...

Ever had one of those days that seems to be a haze from start to finish?

During the nightly code check in, I realised I'd been listening to the same tune on continuous play for most of the day (luckily for my colleages I had headphones on else they'd have gone postal after the first 15 minutes)...

Seems I was coding away in my own little world most of the day to Aphex Twin's "Meltphace 6". Now, all I can remember of the day is that tune, which is presently stuck on infinite loop entirely in my head :lol:

Trust me. If code were ever translated into music, it would be something by Aphex Twin...

This particular track comprises a very gentle but hynotisingly repetetive chord pattern. It's accented by the occasional deliberate detune of the notes and by various other harmonising (or anti-harmonising) melody sounds.

The whole lot is then sat on top of his signature "hyper edited" breakbeat style. Think of a normal drumming pattern that's gone through some sort of bizzare fractal process and you begin to get the idea :-)

Of course, the worst thing about having an Aphex Twin breakbeat stuck in your head is that it will probably drill it's own way out :lol:

I think glitch happens to your ear, whereas most music takes a more passive role. That's why it's pretty easy to space out to it.

Funny you should say that.....

IIRC, his first experimentation with music was apparently turning the sound right up on the tv when he had the Speccy on and listened to the changes in frequency when the screen changed :lol:

Regarding the speccy, it goes back even earlier than that. He claimed he was able to achieve a similar effect messing about on the zx81 :-D

You can tell he was a speccy fan. Half of his tracks have at least one spectrum tape loading sample in them somewhere!

I was always surprised by the luke warm reception to Druqks. I think its some of his best stuff. Not that I ever disliked anything so far although some of his stuff can be hard to listen to at times :lol:

Damn, that's right enough.  My memory fails me yet again :-P

Btw, I thought the same way about Drukqs.  I actually got my CDs from my uncle who didn't like it.  He liked the tunes on it, but not the way they were put on.  He really didn't like the pure acid trance stuff sitting next to the mellow piano stuff.

But what do I care, I got it for absolutely nowt :-D

I've yet to hear an Aphex Twin/AFX/Gak/Polygon Window/Caustic Window/Power-Pill song I don't like :-D

Although there's one track, "At The Heart of it All", that was a joint remix/creation between Trent Reznor and Aphex Twin that's a bit naff.

Ahh, then you need to use Doobrey's Magical Song Removal Technique (TM), guaranteed to get rid of any song currently stuck in your mind.
There's one slightly annoying side effect though.
