What kind of socket does my Apollo 1260 need for 64MB ram?
« on: March 01, 2005, 08:11:40 PM »
I have an A1200T with an Apollo 1260 accellerator
68060 @50Mhz.

As u know the Apollo 1260 comes with 1 72 pin SIMM
socket which can hold a 72 pin 60 ns 32 MB SIMM.

And it also has 72 holes for soldering in another
72 pin SIMM socket.  Thus it can hold 64MB.

But it seems that this socket would have to be a
strange "sideways" socket like the first one, in
order for it to fit into the case.

What is this type of socket called and where do I get one?

I went to Fry's and they had NO 72 pin sockets, only ones in the 30-something range.

I called EPO and they claim to have NO 72 pin sockets,
which is very strange, since EPO has everything.

I could walk some miles to EPO and look for myself
if I knew what the exact name of this socket is called.

I know that u know what I need, so please tell me.  :-)

Was looking in a catologue of conrad(europaean electronics postorder) but all what I could find where straight ones like in A4000T and it didnt say 72 pin so it could be 30 pins like the one you found.
Thought I saw thode connectors by them but maybe I am mistaking.
Maybe at Farnell?
Try looking for simm module holders or simm fittings.
Or under simm.
I was also thinking of replacing the simm holders of an old A4000 so if you find good quality please let me know!

@ChaosLord

I fitted one myself to an Apollo 1260. I used an angled type, which maybe the only style to use on this card. It nicely clears the chip on the other side of the board.

Soldering in place is relatively straight forward if you have a good eye and steady hand (I used a magnifier rig to be sure). The only point to watch is the length of the two locating lugs which fit in the larger holes. The lugs on mine protruded too far and fouled things on the other side. I just snipped them shorter before soldering in place.

You should be able to get these in your neck of the woods. For example Item ES1532, seen here is identical to the one I fitted.

Cheers,

JaX
