Title: Public service announcement: Download Yahoo Groups archives now!
Post by: Matt_H on November 05, 2019, 05:47:01 AM
As @MobbyG noted in a recent thread (https://forum.amiga.org/index.php?topic=74372.msg846059), Yahoo Groups is being drastically changed and pared back. From my understanding of Yahoo's announcement (https://help.yahoo.com/kb/groups/SLN31010.html), the current web-based message and file archives will be deleted on December 14, 2019.

A lot of Amiga mailing lists were hosted on Yahoo Groups (and its predecessor, eGroups) in the late 90s through the mid 2010s and all that data (and community history) is now at risk of being lost.

If you are/were a member of any Amiga mailing lists that were hosted on Yahoo Groups, please use the tool Yahoo provided at the above link to download those archives so they can be preserved. It takes a few days between the archive request and the data being available for download.

I have been able to get archives from the following mailing lists:

I know there are a bunch more out there that I was never a member of. If you were, please take the time to preserve this data.

I don’t mind hosting the Video Toaster Flyer Mailing List on Open Video Toaster. Give me a few days to download and set it up so everyone can benefit from it.

Aminet is probably better, but yes.

I think Jason over at Internet Archive was also working in getting as much as possible from the groups too.

I am expecting nothing less than 100% success on this issue, guys. Don't let us down.

How hard can it be, downloading a few Megs... :)

The process is easy. Finding active community members with access to the various lists is the hard part :)

As an active member of those groups, can't you hail them all via group message or something similar?

I have been able to get archives from the following mailing lists:
  • Amiga-Mediator
  • amizilla
  • barsnpipes
  • delfina
  • ibrowse
  • imagefx
  • Picasso96
  • scenehandler
  • Studio-Amiga
  • VTFML

I know there are a bunch more out there that I was never a member of. If you were, please take the time to preserve this data.

Thanks Matt.  Although I received the notification from Yahoo that they were closing the site (the original announcement suggested the entire service was being withdrawn but they must have backtracked on that), I'd completely missed that the archives could be downloaded.

I have the following Amiga-related groups, although some of these may be restricted private groups that shouldn't be made public (although on a brief look through I can't see anything much that anybody will care about given how old the messages are):

Some of the lists have files which I'm not sure will come down with the archive.

I've already got everything from the groups I mentioned above because I was/am a member of them. The message I'm trying to get out is to members of all the other various groups that I'm not a part of. It's a team community effort :)

I have the following Amiga-related groups, although some of these may be restricted private groups that shouldn't be made public (although on a brief look through I can't see anything much that anybody will care about given how old the messages are):
  •     wetbeta
  •     3-Cag
  •     a1-linux
  •     amigaone
  •     AmigaOS4
  •     amizilla
  •     deathtank
  •     os4users
  •     soundfx-users
  •      vcfamiga

Some of the lists have files which I'm not sure will come down with the archive.
It'll capture the files, although not the associated metadata (i.e., the posted description of each file).

Thanks for your help with this!
