ready to install 3.1 roms
« on: May 25, 2006, 02:36:05 PM »
hey guys. i will be getting 3.1roms next week. i have OS3.5 in my house now. on it is 3.1 installer (HD installer)

at the moment my hdd has 2 partitions: hd0 / hd1

hd0 = WB3.0 boot

now, if i install 3.1 will it just UPDATE HD0 to WB3.1 OR will it completely overwrite everything  which has useful stuff in it (for instance TOOLS in C to do with WHDLOAD)?

also, will my hd1 parition be left alone?

thanks

The installer shouldn't delete anything important, but do a backup just to be safe.

It definitely won't touch anything on your second partition.

3.1 is minor bugfixes over 3.0 really, plus a few extra bits, and better support for ROM patching, hence the requirement for these ROMS in OS3.5 installs.

if you set your installer to expert mode, it will ask you to confirm what it copies - it will check version numbers of stuff it will overwrite and ask for permission, but usually you're better off updating anyway.

OS3.1 will quite happily update a 3.0 boot partition, and will leave the other one alone - just dont go into HDToolbox if it asks, do that first if you need to !

you might be better off having a few more partitions if you have the space, but thats just my two penn'orth.

if you are bothered about overwriting anything, make a copy of anything you have concerns about - either put a backup drawer in C: or copy it onto another partition temporarily.

good luck, and above all, dont panic !

Congrats!

Yes, HD1 will not be touched.

Nope, it won't touch any stuff in HD0 you've added. It just updates certain files already in 3.0. The safe route, from the 3.5 CD, install 3.1, then reboot, and then install 3.5. It'll work better by going that route (as I learned to my cagrin).

I just remembered that when I updated 2.04 to 2.1, the contents of WBStartup were deleted. That may have changed for 3.0 to 3.1, but make sure there's nothing valuable in there all the same.

OS3.5 creats a new workbench-startup drawer and re-names your original as(w-startup old) and leaves it inside your new drawer with everything still in it.

the only other thing to watch out for it sometimes moves your cd0 in devices/drivers you will soon notice when it re-boots and the 0S3.5 disc has not re-appeared

not all install latest files from cdrom to HD.
look in cdrom for system updates.

An install over an existing OS just replaces the old files if a newer version exists. All other files remain untouched.

Be sure not to choose novice mode when running the installer. It might try to install onto HD1. The other modes ask where to install.

You can simply and quickly create a backup of your system HDD with lha:

lha -e -r -a -x a hd1:backup hd0:#?

Then create an emergency disk with the OS3.5 installer and boot from it. This way you can check if OS3.5 runs on your hardware at all without changing anything on your current system.

When running from the emergency disk, you can install OS3.1, OS3.5pre and OS3.5 in one session, without a single reset inbetween.

If installation fails or you miss some of your tools, you can simply extract them from the backup. Or format the boot partition and extract the entire backup in order to revert to your 3.0 installation. If your emergency disk works and the backup is ok, too, there is nothing to fear. Just make sure you have the LhA program either on the emergency disk or somewhere on HD1.

Bye,
Thomas
