GVP A1230 Turbo+ II Battery

Does anyone know what battery is right for the GVP Jaws II?

The writing on the battery says:
DS TIC 1494 618AC 9310A5

The only result I get when putting that into Google is a Finnish Amiga user having the same problem. I thought it might be:

Based on dimensions, but I assumed it would be a 3V cell. Its only putting out 0.2v so I can't even tell you what it is putting out without seeing a circuit diagram of the board.

I have PM'd someone on amiga.org who said they had a pdf manual, in case its in there. If anyone else has a clue, please let me know. It is not as wide as a CR8032 and it is about twice the height (I don't have a micrometer but with a ruler its about 17mm by 5mm ish).

Replace it with a VT 2020 rechargeable battery, it is a 3V lithium cell which will give this accelerator a new lifespan.

 Remember to not boot the Amiga with the flat battery, it may explode while trying to recharge. I lost an Apollo 1220 this way.

I don't remember there being a mention of the battery in the manual, but I'll send it over to ya anyhow, so you have it....

By Jove I think I have found it! Got a reply from Michael at GVP and he said it wasn't a battery exactly but a single wire RTC with a battery inside. They were originally developed by Dallas Semiconductor and now iButton develops them and other 1 wire devices such as ID fobs for EPOS systems to temperature monitoring and storage of data. Link.

Going from that site to the UK distributor (there are other distributors - see link above for links to other resellers), I have purchased one which I shall try when it arrives: Link.

@1200 - It's amazing someone still exist from GVP. I was on their site a few months ago the physical address is located in Newtown, PA which is my home town in the US. GVP used to be located in King of Prussia, PA which was sometimes referred to as Greater Valley. I remember going there in the early 90's for a 4MB Memory module for my A530 Turbo. too cool!!

I found some info a while ago about the Battery Backed Clock in the A1230 from the fellow who archived the GVP products page.

I am going to try one of these new ones and see if the binary output is in the correct format. I guess the reason I was only getting 0.3v output from the chip is it is probably powering the internal circuitry and then sending pulses on the card, not sure if 0.3v is high enough though.... Interesting these clock in a cans!

**** Update ****

I tried the chip from the link above and it DOES NOT WORK in this card. Worth a try though. Whilst I had the GVP removed I tried the one that it came with and it was only out by one minute! So I have left that one in.... I thought it didn't have enough charge to even run the clock but now we know the clock is inside....

... if GVP have the actual ones in stock I will get one when I get my 2x16MB simms to replace my 2x4MB but everything is fine for now.

I know this is an ancient thread but it helped me solve my clock problem and I wanted to add some context.

The "battery" in the GVP Jaws II is indeed a Dallas Semiconductor "Clock-In-A-Can".  There are modern equivalents still around but can sometimes be difficult to find.  I got lucky and found one on eBay listed as "NEW DS1994L-F5+ 4kb Time Memory iButton".  I may have bought the last one as the auction has now ended.

There is a catch with these iButtons and I see some people have had issues making them work.  From the factory their oscillator is disabled.  You need to enable the oscillator for the clock to advance.  Without enabling the oscillator your Amiga can save the current time but the clock in the iButton will not advance. 

All you need to enable the oscillator is an Arduino, a few jumper wires and a single resistor.  The Arduino code at the following link will program your iButton with no changes:

Don't worry about setting the time.  The portion of code that enables the oscillator is the important piece.  You can set the correct time when you install the DS1994L-F5+ in your accelerator.

Again, this is an ancient thread, but bears some adding to.

The original GVP Jaws II A1230 used the iButton (Dallas, then Maxim, and now Analog) DS1494.  This was replaced with a DS1994.  The DS1994 was discontinued per -BobW-. 

The 1494 and 1994 were >04h families of the iButton with clock functionality.  They had the following identifier:
8-Bit CRC Code + 48-Bit Serial Number + 8-Bit Family Code (04h)

The >04h family essentially worked alike.  That's why the 1994 was a drop in replacement for the 1494.

Analog has come up with a "Hey, here's how you should replace a DS1994, because we don't make them anymore" article:

On the above webpage, the DS1904 is the suggested replacement and has a nice footnote by it, stating:  "Alternative device is a functional replacement, but requires some software adaptation."  The above page also states "And another footnote on the data sheet for the DS1904 states that "The DS1994L has no drop-in compatible replacement device."

8-Bit CRC Code + 48-Bit Serial Number + 8-Bit Family Code (24h)  [note, it's not a >04h]

If you look a bit further on the above data sheet for the DS1904, you see that the time is reported as a "32 bit binary counter" where the 1494/1994 had it as a "40 bit binary counter."  It uses the same date/time format as the DS1994 but with one second resolution.  I don't know if that will break the GVP or not. 

So there's some differences.  Anyone do a DSxxxx Clock replacement recently?  I'm assuming the GVP ROM uses the 1-wire protocol that reads the clock?  If we needed to make any adjustments to read a slightly different format, I'm guessing we would need to desolder the ROM, make our own with some modifications, and then put a new ROM on board with some sort of repair type service.
