new CF HD takes many times to boot up properly?

I recently replaced my old IDE HD in my A4000 (OS3.9, BB 1 & 2) with a CF card as my main boot drive and noticed it takes me approx. 4 to 5 tries at booting with 'recoverable error- press LMB' before booting up ok.  No issues at all once it's up and running but any idea why it takes so long to boot up properly?

I'd be more concerned about the errors than I would about the slow boot times.  Assuming the error isn't generated by some setting or issue with software in your Startup-Sequence, or dodgy cabling and/or CF adapter, I'd try replacing with a different CF.  Make sure to set the size of your SYS: partition to within the first 4GB (IMHO I keep mine at <500MB), etc.

cabling fine, adapter new from Amigakit, boot partition on CF card only 200MB

I left it whatever the standard value was when partitioning with FFS...where do I check the value as i can't se it under HDToolBox ?

Select your partition, then click on the "Change..." button, then:

ok so now my max transfer rate is set at 0x00FFFFF, I've read that that is should be 0x1fe00 BUT if I change this figure now will I lose/ affect existing data??

also, noticed my scsi.device is v40.12 and I have installed BB1 and 2 so it should be v43.43??....so can I just copy over v43.43 from BB2 over and all ok?

Yes, you can change this without loosing data.  It only changes the size of the "blocks" of data being transferred to a smaller amount.

I wouldn't waste your time with 43.43, just go for the newest version.  If you have a copy of OS4.1 the latest version from off the 4.1 install floppy (52.3) will work on your system, as well.  I just learned that tip here on this forum a couple months ago!  

Also, before you get too far along in modding your existing system, you might want to check this out, as well.

thanks again:) btw, I don't have a classic PPC system so don't have OS4.1FE for classics..hmm unless I can use the scsi.device from my X1000 running OS4.1FE-Update 1 :confused:

also, heard BB 3&4 caused some trouble on some setups over the years and I'v been fiddling with my A4k for quite some time now so just want to get her where I like and move on to next project...though might experiment with BB3 &4 on my 1200T with mediator setup since that's next in line

You can change it. I bet it's very likely that which is causing your problems. Wrong value makes random read errors which makes your programs crash. Especially if you have the same system cloned on the new device and it has worked fine with the old HD... but anyway, when using CF cards on internal IDE port, it really should be that 0x1fe00.

already changed on both my systems that have CF cards in them.

btw, does this max transfer rate also apply to a SCSI2SD board I have attached to my Cyberstorm MKIII onboard scsi as that board doesn't use scsi.device but rather cybppc.device??

Yes.  The device name isn't relevant in this case (whether it's gvpscsi.device, omniscsi.device, or whatever), the MaxTransfer value needs to be set for each device & partition independently.  Use that value for anything that is IDE or has a CF/SD card in it.  If you have a SCSI drive connected to a SCSI controller, you can go higher.

You can change it without data loss.

But correcting the MaxTransfer value does not magically repair all corruptions. If a file bigger than 128 KB has been written with the wrong MaxTransfer value, it is most likely corrupted on disk.
