UAE on Windows can't see my Amiga drive
« on: March 04, 2015, 03:00:34 AM »
So I'm trying to clone my Amiga drive using UAE on my windows 7 PC however the drive won't show up I've looked in the bios and the sata port that it's hooked to is on but says no drive present. UAE also can't see it.

How do you have an Amiga drive hooked up to a SATA port?  Might be whatever adapters you're using?  FWIW I think I just saw mentioned on another thread that Clonezilla could clone Amiga drives?  Not sure about that one, think I saw some mention, anyway.

You can always just copy Amiga stuff using a directory utility on the Amiga side, don't need any fancy cloning software there.  ;)

Are you running WinUAE as administrator? You can't access physical drives otherwise.

Yes, likely a matter of not running WinUAE as admin on the Windows side.

@Mike, i tried to do that however I cant seem to get both mu CF card and my IDE drive to show up at the same time to copy the files on my Amiga in OS3.1

@klesterjr & duce, I will look at that toninight. However when I go into the Drives section in UAE I can select all of the other devices that I have including my USB

If BIOS / Windows Disk Management cannot see the drive, then WinUAE won't ever see it. First make the hardware work, then the software might work, too.

Mike's first question is most important: how did you connect the Amiga drive (which most likely is IDE) to the SATA port?

Do you hear the drive spin up and make its usual noise when it reaches "cruising speed"?

Could it be that you connected the drive upside down or otherwise wrongly?

Perhaps master/slave jumpers have to be changed for the drive to work on an IDE/SATA-adapter.

Do any other IDE drives work with this adapter?

Yes, I used an IDE to SATA adapter. The drive spins up.

It works fine in the amiga so Im thinking it is a configuration issue. I will try changing the master slave jumper when I get home (it was set to master.)

Ok, got the drive to work. However I had to use a different machine. So how can I copy the drive if I don't have the rom images installed on this PC? It won't start up because I don't have Amiga forever on this machine.
I can see the drive and I made an image of it on the hard drive.

Just use an USB flash drive or similar to copy the relevant ROMs from the other machine. They are located in C:\Users\Public\Documents\Amiga Files\shared\Roms or in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Amiga Files\shared\Roms.

Or just copy them from the AF CD.

Don't forget the rom.key file which is needed in any case.

Or use the same flash drive to copy the image to the machine with AF.

Ok, got everything to show up.

In win UAE how do you take the image of the original drive and copy it onto the CF card?
The CF card is already formatted with the Amiga I just want my old drive image to be copied onto the new 4gb CF card. The old hard drive is 2.9gb
I can see the CF card in UAE.

If you use "add harddrive" in WinUAE, there is a "create image file" button.

But you shouldn't write the image to the CF card. If you do, the new drive will be 2.9GB, too. The additional space would be wasted.

You should rather mount both in WinUAE and then copy all files from the old to the new drive.

For informational purposes, yes, Clonezilla will clone the drive.  It has a fallback if it doesn't recognize the filesystem (which depending on what filesystem your Amiga drive is formatted in, it may actually be able to read it).  The fallback uses dd, which will just do a byte copy, and output to an image file.

Or of course you can use dd, or pretty much any software for creating an image, though a lot of these have the limitation of needing to move it to something of equal or greater size.

Also;

I've found mine to be invaluable, especially for doing this sort of thing.

Why not just use WinUAE's built in clone function? alot easier.

The point of the thread was that he couldn't get winuae to see the drive initially.  fs-uae will also allow you to mount a physical drive.
