X Surf Clockport Pinouts for connecting Delfina?
« on: August 22, 2006, 02:22:45 AM »
I have just received a X Surf and Delfina sound card which I want to attach the a Delfina to one of the X Surf Clock ports and a USB Subway to the other. I note the pinouts are not numbered! Looking at the 2 clockports on the X Surf which side is Pin 1 or the side the red stripe on the cables goes to on both. The pamflet I got for the X Surf is quite confusing and not very informative with regard to this. Has any one installed these items and are there any pit falls or good ideas in fitting as the 2 add on cards are just going to hang there but really need to be secured to something.

For the Delfina the red stripe of the cable has to go to the "end" of the x-surf, the opposite side to the RJ45 interface. That means in an A1200 Elbox Winner Tower with Z4 the red stripe shows to the front of the tower.

Is it clear to you ? If not don't just try cause the Delfina goes up in smoke. So if you power on the Amiga have a look at smoke on the Delfina and power off immediately.

Be careful.

iirc, it's supposed to be connected the way it WON'T fit. But don't count on that!

No idea if it would work with the drivers anyway

I am really confused now!
From what you seem to be saying is pin1 is toward the front and looking at the Delfina Installation sheet you are correct however with regard to Subway it seems different. Look at what this old post says on the subject with regard to fitting the Subway to an X Surf, Quote:

"I did check out many sites and pictures off the WWW, and I looked like pin 1 of the X-Surf card was the pin closest to the back of the card. This proved to be wrong!!!

I tried it that way and I noticed that my HDD did not spin up right away. I quickly shut off the power bar and reversed the connection on the X-SurfII card and all was well.
So, for all those that are interested:
Pin 1 of Clockport 0 is twards the center of the XSurfII card (rivet side)."

So that leaves the question: if the Delfina's red marker goes toward the front of the computer does the Subway go the other way??? I want to get it right and not fry anything!!!

Hi,

I took some pictures:

http://www.rm-web.de/xsurfdelfina/xsurf2.jpg

The X-surf is now installed in an A4000D and I plugged the Delfina on the clockport of the X-surf just to show you the direction.

Formerly the X-surf was built into an A1200 with Winner Z4 board and the Delfina worked on the clockport of the X-Surf.

Hope this helps according to the Delfina.

According to the Subway have a look at:

http://www.e3b.de/

You could mail to the support. The compatibility list says that the Subway works with the clockport of the X-Surf.

Thanks for the photos It was the Subway I was really unsure about however I received a email from Jens Schoenfield which clears the matter up. The Subway does go the opposite way to the Deflina - Part of his email below
quote
Q: I want to install a Delfina and a Subway USB
controller to the X Surf clockports. Can you
tell me what side on a XSurf is Pin 1 on Clockport 0 and Clockport 1.

A: There is no pin 1 on the clockport. This is a
common mistake, and it often leads to wrong
connections, resulting in burnt cables and
defective hardware. Naturally, this is not
covered by warranty. Numbering on the clockport starts at 19 and ends at 40.

Q:  I understand the red marker on cable for
Delfina goes towards the front of the A4000

A: That's correct. I have defined in 1997 (when I
designed the first clockport hardware ever), that
the red marker goes to the _other_ extreme of the
numbers, the highest:Pin 40, because pin 1 is not there.

Q: However there is much confusion which way the
Subway USB controller cable goes as I have been
told the red marker goes toward the back of the
computer which is the opposite to the Delfina
and there is no instructions on the subject anywhere.

A: It's also correct, as E3B uses a different
"logic". For his instructions, the red marker
points towards the not-existing pin 1. Even if
it'll look odd, both cables pointing into
different directions on the X-Surf is correct.

Also Double-check that you really plug the
connectors to both rows of the connector. This is
also a (luckily less common) mistake, but it also
makes a short that results in burnt cables and defective hardware

Many thanks to the people who helped Chris
