$100 computer
« on: October 01, 2005, 05:22:56 PM »
anyone seen this $100 computer they're trying to make.....?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/4292854.stm

if they used amiga technology, it would suddenly become one of the biggest selling computers, thus sorting out all our lack of software/hardware, and amiga industry...

i'm talking sometihng like a an a1 laptop, , if enough were built the prices would drop, userbase would suddenly go up overnight, and everything would be pretty much instantly fixed........

hows about that for an idea...? plus because of mass production the cost for everyone else would sort itself out too
A1200 in original casing
Internal
4.3gb hard drive // 24x cdrom // clock port Hypercom1 // floppy drive
External
3 floppy drives, and a 3 Com Etherlink 3 PCMCIA Ethernet Card

That $100 laptop for the kids of all "Third World" countries will use Linux, a free OS.  I don't think the makers of Amiga OS 4 want to give their hard work away for free even if it already was ported to the $100 laptop hardware.

I hope it happens in as big a way as the original intent has planned and we finally have an installed user base that will be able to compete with M$.  M$ needs competition to get their prices down and their quality up.

Life is made of choices, support the people and things you choose to have in your life.

I choose Amiga!

I wonder if the $100 laptop will be made available to all, or whether its sale will be restricted to its target of developing countries?

For that price, I'd like a couple to play with, and I'm sure an enterprising soul could have a go at getting UAE up and running on it, if its CPU is good enough. Specs indicate 500MHz, but not sure of the type of CPU - possibly an AMD given the list of sponsors.

Hmm... the MIT Media Lab web site states this: Please note: these laptops are not in production. They are not — and will not — be available for purchase by individuals.

Oh well! D'oh! :-(

The report I read said that after initial production they might consider selling some for approx. $200 with $30 to $50 going back to produce more $100 machines for the kids.
