(Old) Commodore 64 monitor to Amiga 600HD?
« on: July 30, 2004, 01:34:47 AM »
Right now i don't realy now what monitor it is, but i've found someone that want to sell a Commodore 64 whith a monitor for around 300kr (1kr = around 7,5 USD) (good price?), right now, i've havn't checked it out (gonna check it out on Sturday (?), but i want to now some things before i check the Commodore 64 and monitor (so i can buy it when i'm there).

1. Is it a good price, for lets say...

1 C64 monitor
1 C64 (including all the needed cables, and good condition)(no manuals)
1 Cassette recoreder

2. How can i check if the monitor works whith my Amiga 600HD? Some extra stuff that i need to buy?

Huh? $2250?!? No way that's a good price!

Depends on the model. If it's a 1702, 1802 or similar early model forget about it. Those old monitors only have composite video. If it's newer like 1084, 1084s or 2002 etc it will work with an appropriate cable.

Confirm the price though, I think you made a mistake typing! There's no way it's worth $2250 :-o

If it's an early C64 monitor you may be able to use a composite input on the front (not ideal), if it's a late one it'll just be a 1084s or similar (ideal).

Early ones were grey, and very ...erm... square.

Price? it depends on how much you want the C64, but a normal 14" monitor is not worth lots of money ;-)

The one I think he's describing is tan... C64 tan... Nature's worst shade of tan....

Still, we have some 1702's that have held up really well.

Definately more of a grey - the one I had was a slightly different shade from the early C64s themselves (the 'Commodore Tan'), and a shiny finish.  Apparently those early ones are a pain to fix, and not so reliable - mine made it to about 1993.

Never thought i would get so many awnsers so fast...=)

Why not composite video? What i need is only a screen that works better than the TV to write on...i can't read the text on the TV! o_O

Yea, i did a misstake about the price, it cost 300kr. 1USD is worth around 7,5kr. I'm tierd...it's 3:20AM over here in sweden...-_-

That's...hmm...40 USD...i think that's right. Check it out at http://www.forex.se...click on "in english".

Need to sleep now...bye...BD

I was thinking of the 1701.

Composite video on a 1701 would be /better/ than a TV (especially through the antenna connector), but a 1084 (or similar) will be /much better/ for reading text.

The monitor output uses 3 seperate signals for the video, direct from the graphics system - composite has just the one, and the signal for that has to pass through a modulator (which in itself degrades the quality a bit).

Also the screen part of monitors has got gradually better over time - referred to as the 'dot pitch' - which is basically how crisp the screen can be, given an ideal input.

$40 for a complete working C64 setup is a reasonable price, and a very good price if it includes a disk drive ;-)

Looks like it takes those RCA cables in the front. Do you have an A501? That should do the trick. That is, if A600's have the right output port. A A500 had a connector on the back for a monitor that the A501 would go into so you could play on your TV.

Anyhoo, it looks like you already know how to connect to your TV with your A600, so if it's using RCA jacks, you should have no problem.

-edit- I think I meant an A520, instead, but since you already got the outputs it provides, nevermind. :-)

Actually, the A600 has both a modulator and composite output build in.

Though an RGB connection like the 1084 has would be better.

You could also try to get an Amiga RGB to Scart cable and a Scart RGB compatible TV (almost all Philips models, most Sony's etc)*.

That will give you comparable/better images then a 1084 and such a TV is much easier to replace :-)

You got that the wrong way around. $1 = about 7.5 SEK so the price is about $40 ;)

(And why doesn't quote work in iBrowse?)

I can use RGB cables on my TV.
Right now i don't want to connect more things to my little 21" TV...i got PS2, NES, Dreamcast, Amiga 600HD and the PlayStation to the TV right now...what i need is a monitor so i don't need to climb behind the TV and move the scart everytime i want to play something that i didn't played before.

And yes, i now how to connect th A600 to the TV...
