Title: X5000 Failing to Boot OS4!
Post by: Acill on December 26, 2020, 05:05:07 PM
I've had my X5000 working great for quite a while now. After being turned off for several weeks it no longer boots anything. It will power up and show the initial X5000 screen, the boing ball will spin and it will then turn to a gray screen and sit. If I do nothing it will reset itself and repeat back to the X5000 logo. I can interrupt the boing ball and get into u-boot and interact just fine. If I load OS4 from u-boot menu It shows "Loading finished ######################### 100%" message comes up after a short time. The next Line reads: "About to call loader entry at 0x7BD02020" at which point it just hangs there.

NO media will boot into OS4. The original CD, my recovery USB stick, or the SSD in it with OD4 installed. The last time I used my system it was fine. I didn't make any changes to it. It's sat and now doesn't work.

The odd thing, if I put in the other GPU I have that supports MorphOS and connect the 2nd SSD I have with a clean install of MorphOS on it, it boots fine into that. SO... This is something OS4 related it seems that came up from nowhere. I now have my system back to stock and am still trying to get it to boot into OS4.

Happy Holidays Paul! From your troubleshooting so far it sounds like the GPU or your primary SSD / primary SSD connection. With your OS4 GPU in place, are you disconnecting the primary SSD when you try to boot OS4 from CD or USB? Just a thought...   ;)  Also, do you have anything plugged into the special “Xorro” slot?

System is as basic as it can be, still failing to boot from anything with OS4 on it.

Hmmm, must be RAM related. I'm sure you've swapped out RAM? Swapped current RAM modules to check for a RAM failure at a different address?

hey Paul I had the same thing happen with my X1000 a year ago and I swapped the CR2032 CMOS battery on the MB and all great....hope this solves your X5000 problem too !

If that doesn't help chekc out the Hyperion support forum (https://forum.hyperion-entertainment.com/ (https://forum.hyperion-entertainment.com/))

Tried a new battery, nothing.

Saw the  DDR sticks showing as not the same, which isn't accurate so I replaced them with another set. The original set was in first, then the newer set. Same issue with loading, but they both reported the same. Tried with just one stick and no change.

now you sound like me and my 1200 Tower...talk about love/hate relationships over the years ;D ..stick with it as your X5000 is still being produced today which is a rariity nowadays so at worst even if it is a MB defect you can send it back to A-Eon to get repaired or if still under warranty they'll send you a new one

Hey Acill,
I might be wrong, be from the serial log I don't it recognizing your HD. Do you have any installed?
If not, do you have the boot CD in the dvd drive?
If that doesn't work, when you tried with the boot USB, you selected to "Boot from mass storage" at the boot menu, right? Did you connect the USB at the first USB port, at the back, top in the row, closer to the back of the tower?

Keep on using the serial connection because it will help you with messages.

Also only if you made a custom Recovery CD or USB thumb drive wich includes  the Radeon Rx driver will it be able to boot with the Radeon RX card from the Recovery media.

Thanks for all the reply in this.

As for the RAM issue. I noticed that and posted the 2nd serial log because it was reading the RAM bad or something I though in the first. I am not mixing RAM and they are in pairs. The first set is a pair of 2GB sticks from Corsair that the machine shipped with. The other is a pair of HyperX 8GB that was working perfectly before all this and was recommended and tested from AOTL for X5000 use.

The USB devices installed are only the keyboard and mouse. The other stuff its showing is the internal USB headers and ports. Nothing USB is connected.

I have tried with my DVD out, HDD out, USB stick in upper slot, CD install disk, all are the same result as this.

I have used new SATA cables, changed ports, no change.

I have replaced the CR22 coin cell with a new one that I measured the voltage on and was a good 3.4V

I tried a new HDD and it wont boot from USB or CD to get to the point of installing as mentioned, so no good.

I have tried with three different video cards. #1 it shipped new with was a R250X (7750) #2 is a HD6950, #3 was the primary card id been using with the newer enhancer 2.0 beta and drivers and is a 560. I know the last card wont boot from the CD and work, buiut the other two should, and #1 has several times before. I have restored my system a few times in the past from CD and USB.

As I mentioned, I can replace the GPU with the 6950 and put in my MorphOS HDD and it boots into it perfectly, so its SOMETHING to do with OS4.1 or something in U-Boot that magicly change while powered off for the last couple weeks I was gone on work trips that's caused this.

I got fed up and packed it away, so no idea what to do, and A-eon isn't really helping much. Trevor asked me to do a lot of what you all said, and its not changed anything.

For now I am giving up. Since all boot media fails I am more in line to thinking its the video driver not compatible, but I have booted from the CD before to restore as well as this USB drive so not sure what the deal is.

even my X5000 has always been very temperamental, now I use it with MorphOS, my advice is to install a radeon HD 5450 and start the computer via the official Prerelease with thumbdrive. I'm sorry and I hope for better support ....... !!!

5450? Will this one work? It was cheap enough to get it and take a chance.

I don’t know, but I Think yes. I Have Sapphire HD5450 1G DDR3 HDMI/DVI-I/VGA, very similar.

Sorry to hear about your problem.
my 2 cents to try to help you is my u-boot config in case there is something in mine that would boot OS4 that you might not have...

The issue, sounds exactly like a GFX card / loose cable issue.

I would try another GFX card. If you have the USB boot sitck, I make, then its tested with a 6570. I have also tested them on 6450 also work.

Do you have an image of this USB boot stick I can try?My question is why have I been able to boot from CD and USB in the past if I had to restore but now I cant? Its something odd happening.

You might check if the monitor cable is hdmi only.
Try DVI to hdmi.

The machine is fine (my guess) just not the right video card with the right driver and video cable!

Really,

Michael

Is a mystery indeed. As posted above, I also use DVI when testing.
Have you changed anything in UBOOT? could try reflashing current Firmware on to card.

So once again, by pure magic, it works again. I did nothing other than had it off for a couple of days. I just got my Radeon 5450 in and tried it, booted right up. Put my Polaris 11 card in again, booted right up. I just don't understand this machine sometimes?!

I am not joking, I did nothing other than power it off a couple of days, swap cards (keeping in mind I had been swapping cards before the 5450 came in), and Poof, it works.

Maybe some wierd static charge?
I have had electronics be effected by static, try them next day and they work fine after not booting at all.

I find my Amiga does this more often than not, after messing with it.
