AmigaKit Buffered Interface speed issues
« on: October 30, 2022, 02:42:29 PM »
I'm hoping more knowledgeable people can help.

I've been slowly reviving my towered A1200 system. After discovering my old buffered IDE interface had died, almost taking the mechanical HD with it, I decided to buy AmigaKits buffered IDE interface with the Fast IDE adaptor (as much as I wanted Elbox's FastATA I couldn't quite justify the price at this point in time).

I was also able to recover and image the HD and copy it to a CF card (thankfully I don't believe any of my stuff was lost - so many memories!).

I believe I've installed the required software and the Gayle adaptor correctly and have set the speed as PIO mode 4, but according to SysInfo (v4.4) I am only getting around 800-900ishKB/sec, which cant be correct given my system specs - I know I'm not going to reach 16MB/sec, but no way should it be less than 1MB !

My system is an A1200, Apollo 060 @ 66MHz, 64MB Ram, OS3.9 with BB2 running on 3.1 ROMs, IDEFix97, 16GB CF card as HD with CF going to the 44pin connector on the interface and CDRW on first 40Pin slot (system is also equipped with mediator with Voodoo 3, Network & Sound card).

Any help or hints would be gratefully appreciated !

Cheers

Also one spare unworking bare A1200

I bought this also about 2 years ago now? Best I could achieve was 3MBs per/sec with SD card reader. Looking at Amigakit website, they only now only sell the 4 way adapter.

Make sure that the Gayle adapter part is put on correctly as this I what is supposed to give the IDE speed increase. Drivers are installed correctly. If using more than one IDE device, then IDEFIX ‘97 is installed and patched.

Personal recommendation is the FASTATA. But even that can be problematic, as I never could get the 16MB sec speed in mentions. Instead only getting 6MB sec. With a 1260 or 060 BPPC accelerator.

Have had the MKII and V versions.

I still use SCSI to get the best speeds.

What happens on a vanilla 3.1 install with nothing else installed.
With my ACA1221, I can 2mb. Using a custom rom, I can up that to around 2.2mb/sec.

I'm surprised to see such a low speed. With a 3.5" HDD, CD Rom and SD card reader and no buffered interface I get about 3.2 Megabytes/sec from the HDD according to Sysinfo 4.4. My HDD is formatted with PFS. The SD reader gives me less than 1 MB/sec but there are so many different variables compared to my HDD - as well as cheap ebay hardware, I tend to use SD cards formatted with FAT as a way getting files to/from PCs.*

I used to run IDEFix but swapped to AtapiMagic when I upgrade to OS 3.2, but this made little difference to the speed measures.

* I now have a project for this weekend - use a decent SD card and test the speed with different file systems. I'll post the results here.

It also depends on configuration, just changing to a faster accelerator card will effect speed.
2.2mb/s is great for a 30 years old computer.

I got 2.2mb, just by using loads of rom hacks / patches ment for blizzard and A4000.
Normally, I get round 2mb using just my ACA1221 and test 4xbuffered interface. Which is alot better than vanilla stock 1.4mb/s.

Hi. My A1200 OS 3.9 DKB 030/40 was giving 685k/sec IDE with a cheap CF adapter and 16GB PFS3 card. I didn't know why but something to do with the DKB rom which only Crossmac utils showed interestingly, SYSInfo didn't show that device as loaded. Same system but with an ACA 1231/42 and I get 2.2MB/Sec IDE transfer.

It took me a bit longer than planned to do, but here are my measures, taken using the second speed reading in Sysinfo 4.4 (it goes up on second speed tests for each partition tested). All the SD Card partitions are on the same card and 60 Megabytes each. I also used Blizkick to enable SpeedyIDE but saw no improvements - maybe the patches are already included in the 3.2.1 ROM.

its a little odd, how I'm getting speeds less than I should with the set-up I have (and around what I would have thought the 020 would have driven everything), but some things do feel a little snappier when I'm using the system and opening and closing stuff...

Is their any other software I could use to speed test the IDE speeds I am getting? (Just in case their is something with my set-up that is just not playing nice with Sysinfo).
