What tweaks and patches for 3.1 install?
« on: September 26, 2010, 03:54:52 AM »
So what sort of patches, tweaks, little apps etc do you generally consider a "must" whether for convenience, performance etc for a 3.0/3.1 install ?

Please include some basic description rather than just the name :)

Hey runequester; Well, I've been using 3.9 for a while, I'm pretty sure most of these are cool under 3.1.

-Magic Menu V. 2.30 (improves look and operation of menus)
-PowerSnap V2.22a (allows cut-and-paste text between almost any amiga programs)
-MCP (Grrr, it does pretty much EVERYthing, not gonna list it all...) Note: some ppl think MCP is a buggy bit of *^&^, but I've used it for years, no problem
-ReqAttack 1.1 (Improves requesters, mostly cosmetic)
-ToolsDaemon (allows you to add menus, sub-menus, hotkeys, etc.)
-some virus checker (there might be virii around on old disks..)
-FBlit (helps to conserve Chip RAM usage)

I'm sure others can add to the list... :)

You could save yourself a lot of time and hassles by downloading classicwb.  Its probably been the  most stable Workbench environment I've ever used (unless you install CGX4-there is a conflict there that I haven't worked out yet

MUI (although probably such an obvious one it probably didnt need mentioning).
Im a bit of an eye candy guy, so for that side of things:
VisualPrefs (lots of options to customise the look of Amiga OS that arent possible by default)
Birdie2k (lets you apply graphics to windows)
One of many icon types/systems. Probably newicons is the way to go for aga machines.
TrueType Fonts.
Magic Menu2 (probably not eye candy on non rtg machines, but still an essential)

Other stuff that's worthwhile are things like:

PowerWindowsNG (a lot of its content is covered elsewhere, but I really dislike the way amiga os requires entire windows to be on the physical view and powerwindows redeems that)
A file system other than ofs/ffs. PFS3 or SFS are probably your best choices in my opinion.
Snoopdos (very handy for when youre customising you os3.x system to find problems)
Stackattack (being that a lot of amiga oses instabilities are stack related this is an essential in my op.)
About a billion others, some of which have already been mentioned by others in this thread

Near as I can tell this is where I write something under the guise of being innocuous, but really its a pot shot at another persons/peoples choice of Amiga based systems. Unfortunately only I cant see how transparent and petty it makes me look.

Agreed.  I have Classic Workbench AGA installed on my A4000 and Classic Workbench installed on my Minimig.  OK, the buggering around with WinUAE is a bit of a pain, but it is worthwhile in the end.  I use P96 for RTG so I haven't seen a conflict there.  However, I'm having issues with my Deneb in DMA or PIO mode and my Power Flyer IDE card which I "suspect" may be related to CW, but I can work around the issues.

I wish somebody could get a licence to issue a full Classic Workbench
installation off disk that already includes the necessary OS3.x files and call it OS3.99.  :)
I've had nothing but frustration trying to get AmiKit and AmigaSys installed on a real Amiga.

Thanks for that.  I'm at work until the 20th, but I'll give that a go when I get home.

I have AmiKit working great on the latest AmigaForever on my PC, but every attempt to do the install via the setup prog and WB3.1 disks on my actual A4000 ended in disaster.

This looks a pretty good way to install it using the working AmigaForever install and it will be a breeze to transfer via an archive file on a USB stick.

I'll let you know how it goes.  :)

@ Amikit

Buuut this was supposed to be about a 3.0 - 3.1 installation. Hey AmigaKit, how about you make a lite version for say, 68030s with no RTG, but a kickass 3.1 based system with the best patches etc.

You know, kick it down a notch, little bamm!

Nobody cares about 3.9 anymore in the 68K world. They all realized it was junk, without MUI, MagicWB, and a crappy TCP/IP stack. Cool people use 3.1 and build their own hot rod.

Props to the classicwb install stuff though, that is the right direction.
