1 GB Ram in A4000 ?
« on: October 02, 2006, 11:23:11 PM »
Excerpt from ebay A4000 MOBO sale:

"Tech Specs: Memory up to 2 MB Chip RAM up to 16 MB Fast RAM on motherboard up to 128 MB Fast RAM on processor cards up to 1 GB Fast RAM on Zorro III expansion cards"

Is it possible to have a gig of ram on A4000?

Yes with 4* modified Fastlane (4*256 MB), but impossible to find 4 modified Fastlane.

Well, then one of the intrepid current hardware guys should whip up a little Z3 board that has sockets for some of the more modern or current memory.

ebay and every computer shop has loads of 64,128,even 256 dimms replaced by even bigger chips in PCs.

Now there is an expansion board someone needs to build. A nice ZIII card that can take modern RAM and let me get a gig in my A4000. Like the Amifast board did for the A3000 zip memory.

And it would be really amazing if it were small enough to fit underneath one of the Zorro slots physically blocked by the Video Toaster...

It would be slower than the motherboard fastram (and slower than the HDD access of CS MK3 / CS PPC).

I'm not quite sure what would be the point.

Why would you possibly want 1GB of RAM in your Amiga? Are you trying to port Windows?

Well , personally from my own computer ethis I think it is impossible to too much RAM. Especially, with the case of Amiga and the RAM Drive, Etc. And I am sure some development gurus would like the extra space.

Like Piru pointed out: it makes a lot more sense to put RAM on the accelerator board, access to Z3 RAM will slow down the CPU.

BTW: The Z3 specs that are quoted above actually allow 1 GB of RAM per board, thus it would be (theoretically) possible to fill up the complete address space with RAM.
Practically the Z3 implementations probably limit this to 2 GB which might be even more than AOS can handle...

Back in the day.....(circa 1993) at a C= function in Australia, one of the talking heads claimed that the A4000 OS 3.1 could address "1.76Gb of RAM".

Of course, that may have been complete rubbish from a product manager who was smart enough to already be scanning the "positions vacant" columns....

I jsut realized that as much bragging and showing offing goes on with Amigans (myself as well in the day), this is almost a call to action.... Mines bigger than yours!

It is VERY easy to make low latency ZIII DMA boards. However they are not economically viable. Few people have A4000/A3000 compared to A1200. The cost of tooling for the PCB, the time taken to create and verify the schematics, the cost of the tools. You would never make your money back.
