CH / Electric Cars / Re: does anyone own an electric car?
« Last post by redfox on September 14, 2021, 04:12:49 AM »
I would like to own an electric vehicle, but here in Alberta, Canada, we are far behind on building the infrastructure required to support electric vehicles.  It's a chicken and egg thing.  The current provincial government still wants to promote the oil and gas industry.  They don't subsidize EV's because most people are still buying gas guzzlers, but people are reluctant to buy an EV until the charging infrastructure is in place.

Meanwhile, I have owned a Toyota Camry Hybrid since 2007.  The onboard computer switches back and forth between electric motors and four cylinder internal combustion engine as needed.  It can run on pure electric, pure gas engine or a combination of both simultaneously.  Battery pack is charged by the engine and regenerative braking.  Gets great gas mileage.  Just fill up at any gas station when gas tank is low.  No range anxiety.

The Canadian (federal) government, on the other hand, is promoting EV's and wants to set targets to produce only EV's in a few years time.  So far, BC and Quebec are the only provinces which have a lot of EV's.  Alberta is far behind but there are some EV's here.

Occasionally, I check for deals on Chevy Bolt.  Would like to have a Tesla Model S but can't afford it.

IMHO it's like swapping one form of pollution for another. Air pollution and CO2 emissions for a battery that is mined from the four corners of the world and is almost impossible to recycle! I wish all the little Greta Thunbergs would actually study science! Some times it makes more sense to burn some fossil fuel that is mined/drilled within national borders (not shipped across the world like Drax wood pellets) as long as you capture the carbon with UK technology now lost through cut grants by the Tories!

Correction: The endeavour continue no thanks to David Cameron!

On the waiting list for a Cybertruck.  I drive my current truck *a lot* for work, and it will be nice to never have to buy gas again.  It helps that the person who owned my house before me was a mechanic for Tesla and the garage already has all necessary charging equipment.  😄

Current truck has 221,000 miles, hope the Cybertruck is available before it dies on me.  That said, the Rivian and Ford electric F-150 also look nice, if they are available sooner.

Amiga Hardware Issues and discussion / Re: Does Install erase a disk?

When I boot from the OS 3.9 emergency disk, FS3's icon doesn't even appear on the WB screen.

This seems to match the other symptoms. What if you boot from the 3.1 Workbench disk?

Quote
I have to go to HDToolbox to find it (SCSI address 0).

But the partition is still there?

Quote
Should I reformat it and load OS 3.1 back on it and then run your program?

No, that's not necessary. If HDToolbox finds the partition, then HDDReport should find it, too. Just run it.

As a first try to fix the issue, boot from a floppy disk from where you see the FS3 drive (WB 3.1 probably), go to the Devs folder of FS3 and rename the file AmigaOS ROM Update to something else.

Can you please run this program and add the report as an attachment here: https://thomas-rapp.homepage.t-online.de/downloads/hddreport.lha

After that edit Startup-Sequence of FS3. Add

set echo on
Thanks - got it!  The problem right now is that there is no FS3: anymore.  When I boot from the OS 3.9 emergency disk, FS3's icon doesn't even appear on the WB screen.  I have to go to HDToolbox to find it (SCSI address 0).  Should I reformat it and load OS 3.1 back on it and then run your program?  (I may not be able to get to this today though - I have a bunch of errands to run).

No, it was just operator error.  I saw both the Format and Quick Format buttons and somehow wasn't thinking that Quick Format was the one I wanted.  No harm done though.  I canceled the unending Format, did it over again with a Quick Format and that worked OK.

Amiga Marketplace / For Sale: Amiga 500++ in custom case
« Last post by thomasM74 on September 13, 2021, 10:06:08 AM »
Hello!

I would like to introduce my recent Amiga 500 ++ re-build that is up for sale.

What's inside:
- new Amiga 500++ PCB from Bob's Tindie shop
- all passive components and ICs are new (except of course custom Amiga chips)
- 8375 PAL Fat Agnus, therefore up to 2MB ChipRAM support (system delivered with 1MB on board)
- M508 card (designed by Matze) with 8MB FastRAM and IDE controller. Installed one large 2.5" IDE harddrive of which 2GB partitioned.
- standard 8MHz M68000 CPU
- Indivision ECS V2 replacement for Denise, supports all ECS Denise video modes and then some more. VGA video output (!!! the analog video circuitry is not populated!!!)
- interface to connect PC AT/PS2 keyboard
- selectable Kickstart 1.3/3.1 ROM
- Floppy drive (modified PC drive, reads Amiga disks) and a Gotek floppy emulator, selectable by switch (both connected, only one of them usable after power on)
- Gotek: USB stick and LCD display signals attached to the USB ports on the case, rotary selector mounted on back of case
- all built into a new Aerocool's Playa Slim low profile ATX case. Case front panel slightly resembles the forms of Amiga 1000.
- built in Meanwell RT65B power supply.

Price, well, I spent following money building it: CPU 10€, kickrom 33€, M508 adapter 120€, PCB 65€, Gary 21€, CIA´s 27€, Paula 10€, ECS 8375 Agnus 70€, crystal and the 74F258 IC 7€, case 45€, power supply 20€, floppy&gotek with accessories 50€, HDD and 3.5" adapter 15€, Indivision ECS V2 135€, all passives from Mouser/TME 150€ = 778 EURO

Including a tiny markup I ask for 800 EUR.
Preferably wire transfer, tracked shipping from Romania with DPD Courier which covers most EU countries (cost starting at 20 EUR for Germany).
Other shipping options to be discussed.

Reliability ... my ebay profile so far 100% Positive, 123 feedbacks of which 64 as a seller (19 during last year). I could also post it there but that would mean additional 100EUR cost just their fees.

pictures, attached below:

PS. why selling ? I am building myself an A2000 (new pcb, etc.)  :)

But when I did - we're back to the "Software error" in a red box again.  I don't get it - this is the same machine as the original install.  The only difference is that I now have the GVP HC+8 SCSI controller and a SCSI2SD instead of the A2091 and an actual Quantum hard drive.

Seems like we'll have to go into details now.

Can you please run this program and add the report as an attachment here: https://thomas-rapp.homepage.t-online.de/downloads/hddreport.lha

After that edit Startup-Sequence of FS3. Add

set echo on

as the very first line. Save it and reboot. Try to see which command is executed last when the Software Error appears.

Amiga User Group News / Next SCCAN meeting - September 18, 2021
« Last post by RobertB on September 13, 2021, 08:23:07 AM »
Happy end of summer, C= and Ami comrades!
The next meeting of the Southern California Commodore & Amiga Network is Saturday, Sept. 18, from 2 to 5+ p.m. at

  Panera Bread Restaurant
  19662 Nordhoff Street
  Northridge, California
  (818) 407-9400

This is our meeting before the November 6-7 Commodore Los Angeles Super Show ( http://www.portcommodore.com/class ) in Burbank, and we'll be finalizing our big plans for that event.  If you have any ideas to make CLASS better, let us know at the meeting!
The Oct. 16-17 Amiwest Show in Sacramento is only a few weeks away. We'll talk about that, too.
For hardware/software, we'll look at the Dread, the new Doom clone, running off my low-spec Amiga 600.  Also for those musically-inclined, we'll look at the classic Deluxe Music Construction Kit with its comprehensive 120-page manual.  The Ultimate 64 returns; this time we'll try to design a Commodore Los Angeles Super Show logo with CAD-M and have that logo spin around so
that we can film it for a CLASS commercial on Youtube.
I'll be giving away bunch of Amiga commercial software packages (mostly games), courtesy of Brad H..
As always, feel free to bring any other hardware/software that you wish to show off!  And you are strongly recommended to be fully vaccinated before coming to the meeting!

          Writing from New Jersey,
