The list is incorrect.

Walker is a prototype and it is not vaporware. It exist in 3 pieces. (I know 2 of 3 owner)

The same for BoXer...

Prototype does not count. Vapor is defined as a product not available for sale after a long period of time, such as Duke Nukem Forever.

There were two PowerVixxens - The LT for A1200s and the TL which was supposed to be a powerful system.

Also there were originally supposed to be G3 versions of the Blizzard and CS, however these were dropped.

By Coldfire do you mean Oli_HD's project?  If so that's a bit unfair as it is(was?) only ever a personal project done in his spare time.

Yet? The Pegasos III (PPC 970) was announced in July 2003 with a release date of "begining of 2004".

@uncharted

I think it qualifies as it was well known. Heck, i wanted one. This is a gray area for sure, it's open for debate:-)

@humppa

Good point, it will stick.

I Agree, it's not very nice classing that project as "vaporware" as he was always honest and open about what was going off, and it was just his little project.

I think you should separate out little projects like this from the real vapourware, i.e. the A5000 and all that poo.

As long as we're mentioning failed C= prototypes, don't forget the CDTV2, A1000+, and AA3000.  Prototype machines are out there.  Also the ill-fated A2200 promised by Computer Answers (it was a CD32 in a desktop case with some added boards).

How also about the PAL-version VideoToaster?

Phase 5 pre\Box?

Apollo ViperPPC

Individual Computers BuddhaFlash A500 version.

just to sum things up, everything after 1994/95 failed.  Even some things before then failed but every company after commodore was unable to develope NEW amiga hardware.... escom and amiga tech where the last that actualy sold any real amigas..but they failed to do new models....guess what there will be no new amigas... ohh well!  Most educated people have realized this ages ago and moved on....some lunatics remains convinced that there is still hope....
The only people that have come close to doing a new amiga whas genisi.morphOS team but somehow that ended up not being amiga enough becasue it was too next gen... go figure....

@piru
amigaDE has nothing to do with amiga, yeah I know the name is confusing.

What about that DCE A500 PPC + AGA expansion... LOL... that would have been sweet. ;-) The AmiJoe was another bummer, my understanding is it was fully functional and ready for production.

--edit--  Photo album link here (http://www.amiga.org/gallery/index.php?n=1242=7)

Looks like an A1200 PPC card plugged into another board with the AGA chips on it. How cool.

If this latest thing with ACK goes like everything else, then I will second this motion.  I will second it to Bill McEwen myself actually.

Okay, these cards probably exist, but there are no drivers. Both are still mentioned in the Elbox marketing material, as being supported by Mediator PCI Busboards.

afaik the AA3000 was different from the A3000+.  iirc, the AA3000 was an A3000 with AA chips on it, an exact-dimension drop-in replacement for the original A3000 m/b.  The A3000+ was a different board, and eventually ended up being the A4000 in a cost-reduced form (e.g. no scsi).  Dave Haynie commented on this somewhere on Usenet.

But would be very interesting to see some dates. Maybe year of the first announcement and year when developer last reported about the hw or the project was officially closed?

Well, then we can put, the opalvision modules, the AteoBus soundcard, the Picasso IV mpeg decoder and PowerPC module, and others.......but i don´t know the names nor the dates

Well, that's IBM's 'vapor;' another reference design that was never widely adopted in the visible market, like POP or CHRP (or AMD's equally nice little Alchemy MIPS PDA that went nowhere visible).

The line item would be something like "IBM 405LP 'e-LAP' reference design derived PDAs."  For all we know it did run but IBM never got anyone to buy in.

Also, wasn't it the Commodore 2200 that was dead, and the Computer Answers(?), Canadian-'built' 2200 did see light as a very limited run from surplus parts?  Maybe I just 'want to believe' in that one, they sure advertised it for months and months...

The A3000+ was an A3000 with AGA chipset plus DSP, the AA3000 was a supposedly cheaper design (IDE instead of SCSI, no DSP, no onboard CPU) and finally became the A4000 - I would not regard those two as vapour since they were prototypes/developer machines.

What's definitely missing: when it became aparent that AGA would surface, C= announced a Z III AGA upgrade card for the A3000/T to save those machines from starving on the shelves - obvious vapour!

I'm not sure this list is entirely fair. Granted, everything on it has never been publicly released, but I think there's a big difference between something that was merely announced and something that was actually prototyped and functional but never made it to mass production.

There are a lot of things that can go wrong in bringing a product to market and actually designing and producing a few units is 9/10ths of the work and the hardest part of the job. To call those projects pure vapor is an insult to the engineers who worked on them.

Thus, I think there should be a difference between vapor announcements and products that never quite made it to market (IE, prototypes exist).

Also, many of those items, especially some of the Commodore ones (CD32 030 board, 2631) were never even announed - they were internal engineering projects that got canned due to bankruptcy and idiot management well before the public was supposed to know about them.

Agreed. And in most cases we cannot be sure if a "merely announced" hardware had no actual prototype behind it. The "giant list of unreleased Amiga hardware" would be better describing the collection.

Pegasos II 750GX CPU card.
Pegasos II 7447A CPU card.
Pegasos II 7448 CPU card.

AFAIK they all were prototyped and fully working, and serves as good examples of hardware that exists but never managed all the way to the market due to other reasons than technical.

I think the most common reasons for most of the hardware on this list ending up as vapor, is because of the huge obstacles that *follows* design and prototyping; that is setting up actual production which requires monumental efforts in arranging component supplies, financial strength (a long haul required). Obviously, designing hardware is nothing. Actual prototyping requires a little more (most HW on your list are designs only, many was never prototyped AFAIK), but when it comes to actual end-user production - here is where most projects gets abandoned!

When you have everything prototyped and tested, you ask yourself: "OK now, is this really worth the risk? When will I get the enormous big sum of invested money back, if *ever*? Is there really a market? Will the turnover be high enough or should I focus on something else?"

Well done on this list... but shouldn't it have 2 levels? Manufacturer (Alphabetically sorted) and product (Chronologicaly sorted)...

for exampe:

Amiga:
>>Anything
>>Everything
>>AOS5
Commodore:
>>A1000+
>>AAA
>>Gemini
Elbox:
>>SharkPPC
>>Dragon
Phase5:
>>A/Box
etc...

That way it becomes clear which companies have been the most flaky... Projets like Oli's Coldfire could then be field under Hobby... thus reflecting the fact that it was just a fun project.

That was my first reaction because I've sold dozens of them, but my memory soon cleared up.

What you have is *not* a Kickflash, they were never made. What you have is a KickflashOS4. The original kickflash was a drop in replacement for the original ROMs and was to be available for all Amiga models including A1000, A500, etc etc.

Maybe you should split your list: there is hardware which has at least reached prototype stage (like the UltraBUS, the Unity, the daVinci), and there is hardware which has never ever been seen by anyone (might be far longer than the first list).

For splitting the list one should also add links to pictures of prototypes.

A version for the A1200 will follow.

One other lost product is the KickflashOS4 1GB (?) expansion.

Due to the high demand, Kickflash OS4, which has been announced on June 2nd, has been revised. The base version now has 1MB of flash memory, and can be expanded to 1GB on an expansion port. Transfer rates can be compared to normal harddrives, but the common access times of mechanical mass-storage media practically don't exist on flash memory: On random access, so-called solid-state memory is about tenthousand times faster than common harddrives.

Many products have never been announced and therefore cannot be vapor. Additionally, it does make a difference whether a product is announced as a future product or a mere design study (e.g. Boxer).

The portable actually existed.  I saw it at a Toronto Amiga show.  Also they had (If I recall the correct model number) an Amiga 5050 which was a PC-Amiga hybrid.  Not sure if it was just an A4000T with a bridgeboard or two motherboards inside one case.

Both the 4040L and 5050 were on display and working at the show.

Best I can tell, the addons package for Opalvision was named the Opalvision Video Processor. This is the label added to the box containing a beta unit that I have.

This consisted of an Opalvision, Roaster chip for the Opalvision boards empty chip socket, the Framebuffer card that attaches to the Opalvision, a fan to cool them that blows through a hole on the daughtercard over the roaster chip (I think, been a long time since I've taken that out of the box).

In truth, Vaporware should be limited to items actually announced as being prepared for sale to consumers. The Opalvision Video Processor definately qualifies. I think they were even taking orders for this before it slipped beneath the waves. Internal prototypes and devemopment systems, though we might wish they had been completed and sold, are not technically vapor.

There had to be smoke for there to be vapor.

But all in all, an interesting and informative list.

Yeah, as Pyromania said it was suppose to have similar functionality as the Video Toaster.

Quote
optional Video Processor and Roaster Chip adds a wealth of additional features and functionality including:
-framegrabbing, genlocking, chroma keying, luma keying, realtime colour processing of live video
-provides an unlimited number of transitions and digital video effects including cuts, wipes, fades, special organic effects (soft- or hard edged), infinite range of flips, tumbles, page peels, image wrapping, picture in picture effects and more 24 bit 35 ns character generator

I believe these are photos of the Roaster (looks like an entire board that plugs in not just a chip)

There was also suppose to be the Opal Vision Video suite:

-a 19 inch rack mountable unit which includes video and audio mixing, switching and transcending connects directly to the Video Processor
-24 bit frame store
-nine video and ten audio inputs
-professional quality video inputs and outputs are available simultaneously in RGB or Y / R-Y / B-Y, composite and S-Video
-linear transparency key provides transparency control between two video sources on a pixel by pixel basis
-fully software sequenced audio mixer with smooth fades and full 5 band stereo frequency equalization

I remember the heart of the Roaster was a xilinx chip that had to be plugged  to a socket on the Opalvision motherboard, but could only work if the card was the last revision (I can remember the number).

It provided 3D effects similar than the toaster, but also usable in PAL.

It's too bad the Roaster did not come out. It would have forced NewTek to innovate the Amiga Video Toaster  Flyer more.

How?  Amiga ceased to exist not the Video Toaster.

As far has the Video Toaster Flyer, well, they did.  They still are.
http://www.newtek.com/vt/features.php

The big beige box/PSU has a different CPU, but their products continue.

TV stations still use the Video Toaster.  Just like any hardware you upgrade to newer versions when the current one gets old.   They don't know/care what it says under the sticker.

If you went into a local TV station and said "Remember when you use to use the Video Toaster?"   They'd probably say, "What are you talking about, use to?  We've been using Video Toaster since, 1991.  Look we have the latest version right here."

I thought the Delfina flipper actually existed??

Are we sure it's vapour?? I could swear otherwise, my memory might be failing though.

I think this was addressed earlier in the thread, but here we go.

The "Delfina Flipper" was announced with a "flipper" interface. The "Flipper" interface meant a zorro connector on one side and a PCI connector on the other side. This product never was released.

What was released was the Delfina "Flipper Edition". This product was clock port only, completely different.

Here's another two to add to the list;
Comspec Arm 1000 (Amiga Rom Module for A1000)
Comspec SA500 (A500 SCSI Expansion Adapter)

The ARM 1000 allows you to add a Kickstart 1.3 ROM to the A1000.

I played with the prototype but it was never released to the public due to limited interest and required Hardware modifications.
The PAL Ground Modification was required and the PAL Chips at U6J and U6L on the Daughterboard needed to be replaced. Also some PaL jumpers were required
between Pin 1 of U6J to Pin 19 of U6K and Pin 15 of U6L.
I still have a copy of the manual.

Also unlike other Comspec Expansions for the A1000 the case was plastic and not metal like the AX1000 and SA1000

I thought it had a Zorro interface and clock port just.

Oh well.
