Sounds fun! I'm a little busy to do any dev work right now, but I happily offer my services as a musician. If you like, I can PM you some example songs, depending on what genre gets decided upon.

I got nothing against cute kids but I hate movies that cast them as heroes who manage to beat the bad guys in an inane and non believable way. Retro video games get away with it a bit more for some reason.
That's because in video games little kids actually do get to beat the ever-living hell out of Dark Lords of the Apocalypse in full plate armor/mecha/whatever, without any cop-outs ;D

You guys can use any of the songs on my band page in my Sig that you want.
Which reminds me: does Backbone have a special music format, or standard MOD, or what?

Even better if the invasion happened in the Victorian era as alien tech + Victorian tech = steampunk goodness...... ....ahhh. I guess we all have our dream games.
Ooh, reminds me of this idea I once had for a River City Ransom-style brawler set in a steampunkey Journey to the Center of the Earth-type setting...

Coming back to this thread, it seems that run-'n-gun is definitely the most popular option, but rather than a sidescroller (because lord, there are plenty of those in the homebrew community,) it might be fun to do an 8-way walkaround shooter along the lines of Alien Syndrome...

Yeah, exactly.

I was actually planning such a game for a long time, but then I discovered that Iji had beaten me to the punch on basically every single thing I wanted to do with the plot (and did it better,) so I never got around to making it :/ Still have most of a soundtrack leftover, though.
