We need a post on where the Amiga stands
« on: February 12, 2008, 03:15:31 PM »
My Amiga has been stored away for some time because of repairs that were needed so I'm at a lost as to everything that is going on.

I think we need an introductory post on where the Amiga stands; what is "standard" today?  Rank the software and operating systems in terms of standard for the system.

If you wanted someone to be interested in joining or rejoining, where does the Amiga technology stand today?  Pretend that they don't know everything.

The Amiga is a Wright Flyer and the rest of the world is traveling in Learjets.

Seriously: the Amiga is loads of fun, but you need to be a hardcore fan to forget about all of it's disadvantages compared to a common wintel PC these days. For sheer usability and compatibility with todays technology(Internet, USB, digital cameras and whatnot) without wanting to go throuh any trouble, a Windows/Linux pc (or Mac) is the way to go. Amiga is good for fanatics...

Hi,

@Chuck T

The Amiga standing today is that it is just a fun hobby
computer to play around with. I really have no hope for the
Amiga Computer as we knew it to come bach into life. The
truth is that there is a large user group that keeps
hoping that it will spring back into production, but I
think that if you look at the PC as it is today that the
Amiga could not possibly succeed, our best hope is if that
Amiga Inc. could rewrite a new OS in the Amiga realm that
would work on the new Quadcore processors, this would give
the Amiga real multi tasking using four different processors
at the same time. (Watch out for the flames on this one).

Come on you Amiga fanatics, get real the PPC has fallen
away to the scrap heap, the only viable processor is Intel
or AMD made. Just think a nice stable OS running on one
of these systems without Windblows, thats divine, and fast!

You could wait around for the Amiga One to be produced but
I will stay with the AF or WinUAE model because I just don't
think the Amiga One will exist for long.

Watch out for the flames
I think I will probably get burned on this one!!!

The ONLY thing that bugs me about the Amiga, is that the hardware is SOOOOOO expensive.  Also, I can`t just go and buy it on a whim from my local high street - I have to send money to some small company in another country.

My setup is:
A4000 / 040
16MB Ram
A2091
20GB HD
CD Writer
1084S

Works just fine for me & OctaMED.

I'd be happy when I have a real Amiga here, emulation is nice and well but it doesn't give you the hands on feeling.
As a platform, it's dead to the entire world except for some hardcore fans.
I'm hoping to pickup some programming again and playing Pinball and Arkanoid in the wee hours of the night  :-D

Commodore sold the 6502 chip to raise cash.  I believe that AMD could easily produce a chip on a smaller nanometer scale if someone one would design it for the same reason.  AMD is in trouble and when you have jobs on the line, you need a product to sell in order to generate cash.  The Mac went to Intel and the Gamecube uses Intel so why can't we change a little?

If someone who knew the technology would produce a quad core 68000 chip, who knows the potential?  Why wouldn't some of the old Commodore team want to get back in the game?

You have a product that could piggy back on other's products.  You just need to convince people it would have potential and interest.

Gamecubes use intel ????

Affraid not.  The gammecube and the Wii and Xbox360 all use PowerPC processors

Amiga is heaven, everything else is hell.

Call me "Amiga fundamentalist"  :-D  :-D  :-D

Now for the serious part: there were some stuff in the Amiga I can´t find in newer OS's. It is way outdated now, as it has more than 15 years of "development lag".
But it still cool.
