Got the Bug again....
« on: April 15, 2012, 12:35:36 AM »
Ok, my little story..
I've been a miggy user ever since when...  a silent lurker in these forums but always hands-on active.
Left for a while because of personal things but got the Amiga bug again (again..again) about a year ago.
Decided to trick up my A2k (see avatar) and have enjoyed countless gaming/demo sessions on it. However, I got bored with seeing 'requires AGA' or 'not enough memory' when trying things on my (somewhat vast) collection of cover CD's. Especially demos! Not happy with this, a choice arose. Upgrade my A1200 or replace the A4k I sold years ago (regrets!)
Much money later, I now have (in order of purchase)-

Amiga 4000 in Micronik tower (the one with the front door) + bus board
4GB CF HDD
A3640@33mhz
3.1 Roms
Cybervision 64/3D

Now that I'm enjoying all of these colours and pixels I'm wondering what more I am missing and what more this machine has to give.

Now my question to you good people is where should I go from here?
Please bear in mind that I'm under no illusions of going on the Net with it but, really do enjoy demos and gaming.
Your suggestions are welcomed :)

Here in the US, I would recommend a Video Toaster, nice board to play with on A4000.
Maybe try to get Shapeshifter installed and play with MAC stuff.
As for upgrades, if you can afford, any 060 board with some more ram (maybe 128MB ZorRAM for RAM only upgrade http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=958 )
A500 KS 2.1, 1MB Chip, 68000
A600 KS 3.1, 2MB Chip, ACA630 32MB RAM
A1000 KS 1.3, 8MB RAM
A1200 KS 3.1, Blizzard IV 50MHz 64MB RAM
A2000 KS 2.1, 68030 25MHz, 6MB RAM
A3000 KS 3.1, 68030 25MHz, 16MB RAM
A4000 KS 3.0, 68040 25MHz, 16MB RAM
CDTV KS 3.1, 4MB RAM
CD32
(AROS BOX) Dead :(

Thanks amiman99. Never really understood the video toaster thing. Just googled it and still don't. Can't see what it can offer other than video effect creating which I'm not into (if I'm wrong please shout at me!)
Had a 060 in my original A4k so I think that's what is next... or a PPC but I'm not sure if what I'll get is worth it (remember I like the 'classic' amiga experience)
Zorram - yup, thought that might be the next step too ;)

Tbh sounds like a toasted would be of no use to u. As would an 060 board. Your 040 is plenty for now. You should look into doing fun stuff like mod tracking-audio video sampling-animation with dpaint-et c. There is much more to Amiga than games or demos.

Now that's just what I'm thinking! I've used octamed loads in the past, still think I have some of my old tracks somewhere.... as for Deluxe Paint, I did my school art qualification on that in the day! even won a book token for designing the school christmas card back in 95! ... memories.

I like the Toaster Chroma video effects, nice to show off some video stuff, if you like video you could do some green/blue screen effects with chromakey. Make an animation in Dpaint and insert yourself with chromakey.
The octamed runs on any Amiga, so no need for fast CPU.
As for demoscene, most new Amiga demos run on 060 or UAE, so it would be nice to have.

If you can find it, a Denab board so you can use USB devices and even boot off USB devices.

If you're in Cleethorpes, you could pop into the Lincs Amiga Group's next meeting, Saturday June 2nd,

See: http://lincsamiga.org.uk/

I'd say the best upgrade for your system would either be a Flickerfixer so you can use LCD Monitors, or a Turbo Board with local memory, like a Cyberstorm or a Warpengine - We have one user who has an Apollo which is also a nice card :-)

Hi Robert. I signed up for the LAG newsletter and full intended to pop down the other Saturday to meet you guys. Unfortunately, on the Friday I got a stomach bug so it didn't happen. Look forward to meeting up in June though :)

...you have a bit of an odd kit, for a demos / AGA project.  It is a partially tricked out machine, relegated to not much.

You toss in an ethernet board and you could get on the web - pages wouldn't display flash content and there is no java, but you could definitely do basic browsing and send/receive emails.  I am guessing YAM is still around, if not something newer and better.

Upgrade to 060/ppc and you have a nifty little email/mp3/game machine, though a pricey one.  The A3640 doesn't have local ram, so that bottlenecks you a bit.  A better accelerator with local memory would speed things up nicely (though kudos on the overclock, that helps a LOT on that board).  If you can find one, a Blizzard PPC would open up PPC demos to you, as well as OS4 (I think?).  With OS4 you can step up to webkit and Mozilla based web browsers.  I guess it all depends on what you want to spend on your bug.

My last tricked-out miggy was an A4000 desktop with 060/50+PPC+CVPPC.  I had to sell it after the terror attacks of 9/11 caused my company to go under...I lost my company car and had to buy a car to find work.  Presto-chango - The Amiga turned into an old, used Chevy Blazer.  I later sold my stock A1200, as I didn't foresee having the cash to upgrade it to a usable state.  I would *love* to have an Amiga again - but I can't justify spending the money when I can get so much more power for so much less dough.  I guess I am more practical than I once was - not to mention the pocketbook is smaller than pre-9/11.

@A3KOne: Thanks. I considered PPC but it's MUCH money so I think a 060 be be next. Also considering a 128mb Zorram module for now. Sorry to hear about your 9/11 related troubles. I hope you find your feet and get back into Amiga's soon.

If you are going to buy an 060 or an PPC you are going to get a CSPPC or an MKIII both of these have scsi that is far superior to the speed of the zorro ram so buying zorro ram would be a waste of money.

You will not run out of RAM in 3.9 and if you are going 4.1 you will be able to use swap and the scsi speed is about 30mb/s when the zorro ram is about 10 mb/s.
