Blizzard 2060 Startup Sound Effect......
« on: December 29, 2018, 04:01:18 AM »
I noticed that the song by Duran Duran - Ordinary World has the exact same sound effect played within the song 3 or 4 times that my AD516 Soundcard Blizz 060 makes!
If you have the song, check it out! Cool! I wonder where that sound originated?  ::)

Thx for reply Paul! I googled for sound effect but I can't find one. It's a digitized effect that sort of wavers up and down about 3 times. Very hard to describe. I'll get the time marks from the song and post back. You may have to use headphones to hear it. Maybe I can record the sound and post using my iPad (don't know how though). But it's the EXACT same sound effect and it's very interesting that the sound effect must have went around the the audio industry back in the day. Give me a bit as I'm having morning coffee!  ;D

Sorry... Got caught up in all the New Year festivities yesterday...  :o

OK, in this YT video, the instance of the sound effect is heard at the 3:12 mark and ends at 3:16 - so 4 seconds long. I only hear it once in this video. I have an MP3 (obtained somewhere a long time ago) that has it maybe a few times. But you can clearly hear it - especially if you’ve heard a Blizz 2060.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FqIACCH20JU

The AD516 makes the sound at startup or reset and makes the sound twice as the 2060 always boot twice. The 2060 makes the sound to let you know it's taking over the system. It actually makes the sound twice, once at startup and a second time after the P5 ROM takes over.

Dang, this keyboard is loud today!  ;D

It makes me wonder what it's doing in the song really.

Exactly....

Ok, so I just watched a vid explaining how to create a vid with an iPad using iMovie and upload it to my youtube channel. Gimme a bit to create a vid of the A2000 with an AD516 Blizzard 2060 booting up.   :P

My first video with an iPad.... wasn't so hard to figure out. Uploaded to my YouTube channel. What an AD516 Blizzard 2060 sounds like at startup!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFVhmwlAh14

So compare the two sound effects. It was just an observation. Not quit the same pitch.
FYI, the song Ordinary World was released in Dec of '92. The Blizz 2060 manual has a copyright date of '95/'96. Interesting.

However, I think Paul has a great question; why's the sound effect even in the song?

Thanks for putting the effort in and uploading the Blizzard 2060 startup sound effect video! It is similar to Duran Duran, so well spotted.

Amiga's + Beers + Tunes! A great combo!  ;D
I'm going to upload a better video now that I know how to.

It would be nice if you made some further videos perhaps showing off some software on that beast of a 2000.  8)

Why yes, yes I think I will! I have a bunch of interesting stuff I started last spring that I want to get back to. I bought a ton of boards and parts. I might be dangerous with this new found video capability though!  8)

Paul, what software would you like to see me demonstrate on this bad boy? (we're having fun now Miggy peeps!)

DANG! I feel stupid! I completely forgot that it's the AD516 soundcard that makes that sound effect! NOT the Blizz 2060! I wondered why there was so many views of the thread yet no had ever heard the sound effect!  :o The sound is heard twice 'cause the Blizz always boots twice. DOH! I have corrected some entries in my posts. Seems I can't change thread title though. I have the original AD516 software and was going thru the V3 manual and read about the startup sound effect as I want to make a short video of the AD516.

I was thinking it would be nice if people could check out the V3 manual to get an idea of what the sound card is capable of as it's much more detailed than the V2 manual. I googled and can't even locate the V3 manual online anymore. A few of the major Amiga manual sites have vanished. Namely, DLH's site. If anyone is interested, I can make the V3 manual available for download.

Again, sorry for the incorrect info! It sucks to get old...but there's always beer!  ;D

In the mean time, I'll be working on showing off the AD516!
BTW, I got my first retirement check yesterday! WooHOOO!

Well, I did install the AD516 like 8 years ago! I knew sound effect came from the AD516 but had forgotten. Anyways, the point of this post was not that the Blizz made the sound, it was that a piece of Amiga gear made a sound just like the effect in the Duran Duran song.

Now, if you ask me, that makes sound effect even more interesting as the AD516 is capable of mastering CD quality 16 bit audio. Back in the early 90’s it’s possible that a professional recording studio might have used an A2000 with multiple AD516’s to mix and record multi-8 track audio. A hobbyist musician would still be able to do this today using this card. Check out the specs on the Amiga Hardware Database.

http://amiga.resource.cx/exp/ad516

As mentioned earlier, I wonder where that sound originated and how it ended up in that song or even in the ROM of the AD516?

Yea, I wondered if it wasn't some public domain sound effect from the day.

I'm so curious about the sound effect I sent off an email to non other than, the Duran Duran folks!  ;D I briefly detailed the sound effect and referenced the DD vid plus the one I made and the Amiga 2000 and the Sunrize card and asked if their mixing studio may have used one. A lot of people have asked very detailed technical questions about their music and got responses. They have a contact just for asking such questions - pretty cool! They advise it can take some time to get a reply. I hope I get one. The web is a great thing for things like this!

As far as the Blizzard goes, now we know why Paul's card doesn't make the sound!  ;)

A-HA!!!
- LOL good band too!

Does the startup sound effect come from the AD516 then or is it coming from Paula?

Yea, it's coming from the AD516...  ;)

BTW, I going to re-upload the Sunrize V3 manual to my FTP site as I had removed them due to the size of the file.
Per this post http://forum.amiga.org/index.php?topic=67468.0 back in 2014.

The V3 manual is nowhere to be found now. It's a great manual detailing the audio processing of the card
