It's said to be too complicated and/or performance-hitting to address the different endianess, IIRC - thus it would break the compatibility to legacy software.
If there would be more developers left in the Amiga area, I'd have considered it interesting to just give it a try, i.e. some developers joining MorphOS Team to port it to x86 and see how many users adopt it despite not being able to run 68k software.
But on the other hand there is AROS already, so it would make more sense, IMHO, to bring its usability towards the one of MorphOS.
