Description: So a friend of mine just showed me this and left it with the thought, "Did Commodore take the design of the CD32 from this"?  The "Painter" was to be a 030 Falcom mini comp. from Atari....  VERY interesting....

Looks like somebody copied someone else-it's not for me to say which is which.

Looks to me like Atari tried to copy Commodore AGAIN...and failed AGAIN...of course, had they known that Commodore were as lost as they were and was about to deep six during this era, Atari might have managed to survive in the home computer arena by trying something different for a change.

Agree with last two comments.  You have a set-top box w/cd.  There ain't a whole of other creative avenues-realistically speaking- hence the common form factor.

Now were there spies involved on any of this?  LOL, maybe!!!

Damn I want to have that  8-)
But I don't think either one of them stole the design from the other. It was also a very common design also for audio appliancess back then.

@ adolecent,

yeah, now that you mention it, it DOES look a bit like a PS2 also...

I doubt it.  The CD32 was developed around the same time 1992-1993.  And, the later versions of the Microbox look a lot different (some websites say they were modeled after HP/Sun workstations).  If anything the later versions look a lot like a PS2.  :)
