Converting a peecee unit to Amiga Standard
Converting a peecee unit to Amiga Standard
Previous Image | Next Image
Description:  This is how you have an Amiga compatible drive.

Cut the trace from the controller chip to pin 34 and wire it to pin 2.

Put a wire linking pin 34 with pin 30.

Also you have to change the drive from DS1 to DS0. This is hard to find in some drives.

On NEC FD1231H is the JA1 bridge, who must be set in other way (it's a SMD shunt).

Hope someone find this information useful.

mod went perfectly, and I'll have a big bunch of modified and thoroughly tested units up for sale soon. If you'd like one, please PM me.

Mitsumi D359M3 have a "hack-able" eject button (perfect shape), but is a total nightmare to modify.

Anyone know of the best drives for Amiga 500 and 1000 that fit without hacking the case?  Would like to replace a drive in my A1000...

This is totally information I need, I got a A600HD in a dumpster with a missing diskdrive, and I got alot of PC-diskdrive, yes, they are much like mud for me. Got alot of sony-drives, and other brands.
I don´t own amiga-spareparts, so if the idé cable for amiga diffrent to PC, I will have no choice to mod a pcdrive, with I have no problem to do..

orange, from the instructions below the picture: "Put a wire linking pin 34 with pin 30."

This is where the RDY signal comes from.

It is just as good as any Aminet circuit with discrete components.. Either way (aminet hack or join pin 34 to 30) the RDY signal will have nothing to do with the actual spinning up of the drive, but that doesn't matter.. What's important is that the RDY signal goes low at one point and the software becomes happy.

This hack works with the dreaded Samsung sdf321B 3,5 pc floppy drives?

This hack also works with NEC FD1231T tough you have  to modify the floppy drives case to make it fit inside A1200

I still think hacking cable is better. (BTW, I took the diode idea from Aminet, no reason to be jealous)

The Aminet is full of FDD hacks. It has complex solutions for RDY signal that are probably best. :-P

Dont worry rkauer, we (you and me) know that it works with all all the games , with all the stuff.
I can tell you that, this thing, will work with the brand and model of PC disk drive that you want.
I simply go to my prefered PC things store and buy a new 3.5 disk drive, could be a sony, a  samsung, a OEM one, no matter the model or brand

Cheers

That's not mine!

And your solution is securely worse than this.

What I really think is you are jealous that a "cucaracha" guy can have a better idea than you.

Proud is a virtue, jealousy it's a sin.

And if you look carefully at the image, you'll find the _RDY signal (output) is routed from the _RData (input). Simple and elegant.

standard PC floppies don't have RDY signal, so your solution will work just with some drives and some games.

Here is a better one..  :-)

Nope, they work with a NEC FD1321H and an YE-Data YD-702D-6639 so far. Works like a charm in those three brands of floppies so far.

The Sony and YE-Data units are common as mud in every place in the world, I think.

BTW: this hack works fine with NDOS games. Even Xcopy works fine. :-D

Once we post pics and a description we cannot edit the text.  In case you are pondering why it was not done...

So do NDOS games really work with this hack?  What PC drives work with this just Sony?

Dear orange, ALL NDOS games works, and also Xcopy.

this is not enough, you won't have RDY signal for NDOS games and programs such as X-Copy.
(you need diode for that)

BTW, its much easier to just modify the cable as you can simply replace the drive later with new PC FDD if it breaks

anyone can EASILY figure out the wiring after reading pinouts and instructions from Aminet

Ok, now the things are quiet different, you know the author and the source, so you can easily add that information to the picture information(by the way i was who shoot that cute picture too   :-)  ) I dont belive in good intentions, i belive in good actions only, so here u have the chance to fix this thing, as i sayed before, now you know the author and the source of that information, please edit the description.
I know that this mod is something relevant to amiga lovers, but i never feel the need to publish it here, because most people that post here belives that Amiga disk Drives were some kind of unique NASA invention and seems that no one could change they minds about it, but the reality shows that Amiga disk drives are mostly the same than the pc ones
oh, by the way, all amiga or pc disk drives could be switched from DS0 to DS1 or DS1 to DS0 easily

Sorry for that.

I was intended to ask Gav about the author, but anyway I think your hack is extremely relevant to community. Of course I miss the link to the original site. Never claim the "fatherhood" of the modification.

Congratulations, I hope you don't be bothered to spread your idea.

I hope you be grateful fellas.

EDIT: the original photo and idea are taken from "Elpiloto", aka Hernan, from Argentina.

I'm very grateful to him from giving away the knowlegde to convert "standard" floppies (IBM modification) units to Amiga (original Shuggart standard).
