Come join us for a celebration of the Amiga, its groundbreaking accomplishments and its rich history at the Computer History Museum - Link: Amiga 30th Anniversary (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/890300835/amiga-30th-anniversary-in-california)
On July 23rd, 1985, the world was introduced to the Commodore Amiga Computer. This year marks the 30th Anniversary of the Amiga's launch and to commemorate that seminal event in computer history we are throwing a party.
Join us on Saturday, July 25th, in a celebration of the amazing Amiga. Our party will feature an evening of epic Amiga Fun. The event will be a banquet with feature speakers, panel discussion, historical artifact displays, and more.
The main event for the banquet will be a panel discussion of original Amiga developers including:
Dale Luck
Carl Sassenrath
Dave Needle
RJ Mical
Plus more
The panel topics will cover start-up life in 1985, building the Amiga 1000, and how the Amiga influenced technology over the last 30 years.
Additional speakers will include:
* Trevor Dickinson, co-founder of A-EON Technology, makers of next generation Amiga systems and software.
* Colin Proudfoot, Former Managing Director of Commodore Business Machines (UK)
* Mike Battilana, Founder CEO of Cloanto, maker of the Amiga Forever emulation software.
We will also have video presentations including a special extended clip from the upcoming %&$#?@!%&$#?@!%&$#?@!8220;Viva Amiga%&$#?@!%&$#?@!%&$#?@!8221; documentary video presented by "Viva Amiga" producer Zack Weddington.

And *boom*. Interest in this event just went up ten-fold. ;)

Just get Debbie Harry there and you will fill the place!
-
Everything only ships to US and EU.
X No deal X

$5000 and I get An AmigaOne X1000 ;-)
Why is everything US/EU shipping with that Kickstarter?
Trevor you're from NZ show some love down under ;-)
-
ya not even Canada :(
-
Thanks for the feedback. I will check with the organizers. I would have thought Canada, Australia and NZ etc would be OK. Watch this space.

US and EU is pretty narrow if you ask me. You exclude a lot of potential backers.

I hope my fellow Amigans are enjoying the relevance of "Kickstart" and "Amiga".

I can't believe I didn't think of that myself!
-
Can't get Haynie to go?
-
I'm not sure I'd want him there, as far as I know he's very outspoken regarding the continuing modern Amiga - I can't stand people who look down on passion just because they need to keep in check there own reality... I think that visualisation affects quite a few people actually but anyway ;-)
-
Can't get Haynie to go?
I don't think Haynie worked on the A1000. He got hired later. But, maybe he's a "plus more". :-)

@All
Getting the shipping wrong can sink a kickstarter compaign. We decided to launch with US and EU shipping and add the other countries later. We will post updates here and on the kickstarter when we get shipping worked out for the other places.
Thanks for the support and hang tight!

I see Dale Luck is keeper of the Holy Grail. Can't think of anyone better to take care of it after we lost Jay.

Hopefully its sorted by Sunday 19th April.

cool! I'm in the minute Canada is on the shipping list;)

Mh... It is good to have some former Commodore Amiga Team members in a 30th Amiga anniversary, but I am worried this seems to be just an AmigaOne X-1000 promotion event.

Ships anywhere in the world... :)

I signed up to support this and am excited to attend. Little concerned at the low level of funding so far....I would have thought they'd have hit the 20k by now.

@all
We've opened up shipping to pretty much everywhere now, so go ahead and back us. We spent a lot of time thinking about the different levels and what we could offer. In the end we want as many people as possible wearing their kickstarter shirts with pride.
@bladerunner1963
The key to success is getting the word out. I doubt we will see any sort of press coverage or make it to the kickstarter front page as an editor pick. We just need to grind it out. Given we are over 50% already, after just 6 days, I'm confident we will make it.
I've been getting the word out by calling my Amiga friends, telling them about the event, and asking them to pledge $10. Since the kickstarter launched we have had a number of folks step up to come, including legendary artist Jim Sachs. There will be an update to the kickstarter soon with more details.
Thanks to everyone who's backed us so far. For everyone else, don't you want a cool T-shirt?

I don't think Haynie worked on the A1000. He got hired later. But, maybe he's a "plus more". :-)
I know Dave is busy moving right now... there is a ton of his stuff on eBay. So, collectors go grab some stuff!
Dave was at CBM during the Amiga 1000, but he was working on the C128 project - which also is celebrating it's 30th anniversary. I know Dave worked on that project because I have his C128 that was stolen off of his desk by one of the corporate guys. It was sent to me so I could develop some software for it before anyone else. It has a nifty sticker that says, "Property of Commodore, Not FCC approved, NOT FOR SALE". It also has lots of jumper wires and mods. :) I am bringing it to CommVex, which is celebrating "30 years of the C128" on July 18-19 in Las Vegas. CommVex is an annual event with the largest gathering of Commodore users in the country.
I am go to back this project and attend myself. It will be good to see the old crowd of developers and users.
-
I am interested in going to the event, but I have no interest in backing the Kickstarter campaign. Nothing personal, I just have a bad taste for Kickstarter as a whole lately. I'm a man who likes to have cash in hand, you take my cash, give me the product I paid for back, and we're both good to go. If you could direct me to where I can buy a ticket for the full show, please do let me know.
Is there somewhere I can simply purchase tickets to the event, exhibit hall, and the banquet and everything else? The below indicates to me that this is a booked show, a done deal long before a crowdfunding program got together, so I'm a bit curious about it all. If the date has been set, guests booked, event booked, caterers hired - I'd just prefer to pay whatever ahead of time "full ticket" cost that I can vs. spending "good guy" money to Kickstarter and paying into something that's seemingly already a set in stone, scheduled and assumedly a funded and backed event. I see no mention of "if goals are not met, event will not happen", so I assume it's a set in stone event regardless of Kickstarter outcome. Please just tell me where I can purchase a ticket and I'll be the first guy waiting to get in with my ticket in hand when the doors open. Easy peasy request, IMO. No offense intended - I simply have had too many bad interactions with Kickstarter lately. I am appreciative that a Kickstarter campaign lets the event hit a wider scope, but the wider scope is of no concern to some people, including me. Much like going to a rock concert, a stage performance, etc. - some people like myself just want to buy a ticket and attend without muss or fuss.
I'll say it outright. I've seen too many already planned, booked events/products, backed and banked - hit Kickstarter long after deposits have been paid to the venue, caterers, (manufacturers, et al. in the case of product) etc. The events or products were going to happen, but Kickstarter campaigns get started *after* the fact, and I'll be quite frank here because I won't get screwed over on such things again (and I have been screwed over in the past). I apologize if I am at all insinuating anything shady towards you all, but I am sure I am not alone in the ideal that some people just "want to buy a ticket and attend" without dealing with Kickstarter itself, which many people are finding more objectionable by the day.
I'll gladly pay for an event, paid in full up front, cash money, I pay you, you mail me the tickets type of deal - but I won't pay for a more expensive brand of Scotch (or other more dubious party favors) for event organizers if dates have been set via "Crowdfunding". I don't want a "shout out", a poster or T Shirt, a kiss on the cheek or handshake with a hug from Someone Of Some High Esteem. In fact, I don't want any of the Kickstart offered perks, lol. I just want a ticket to the event, the entire event. Me have money, you have ticket deal. A "me give money for ticket, you give ticket. Me come, all Cavemen have a good time" type of deal.
Let me know where I can purchase a ticket and I'll be there with bells on - I've always wanted to meet the original Amiga crew. I had the good fortune in my youth to speak to Jay a number of times, but never had the good fortune to meet any of the rest of the old crew. It looks to be a tremendously fun event and I hope to attend. The fact that I can't find a one click ticket outlet is my sole reservation on this - I won't deal with Kickstarter even if I got a ticket to the event at the $10 contribution rate.
The only "tickets" I can find on http://amiga30.com/ point me directly to the Kickstarter ordeal, and as I've said, I just want to buy a ticket without dealing with Kickstarter again. My cash is in hand to hand you for a ticket, my other hand on my cell phone to call my travel agent to book my 2200 km long flight from Canada to California, simply put.
"Join us on Saturday, July 25th, in a celebration of the amazing Amiga. Our party will feature an evening of epic Amiga Fun. The event will be a banquet with feature speakers, panel discussion, historical artifact displays, and more."
That to me indicates that the down payments for venue, catering, and all other horribly expensive things have been nailed down. So just help a brother out, where can I buy a ticket outright besides Kickstarter?
The wedding date is set, as is the venue, so to speak - why is a Kickstarter being started and where are those funds going, why "stretch goals"?
And again - where can I simply buy an all inclusive to all events (minus lodging) ticket to the entire scope of events, bought and paid for - *without* dealing with Kickstarter in the least?. Yes, I do find them _that_ objectionable to the point I wouldn't attend a hell of a good event if the only way I can get a ticket is via Kickstarter. Honest to God.
Also, anyone in the community have some recommendations for lodging in the nearby vicinity for us long distance travelers? It's been a number of years since I've stayed in the Mountain View area.
-
That to me indicates that the down payments for venue, catering, and all other horribly expensive things have been nailed down.
No, they have not been nailed down. It depends on the Kickstarter.

Let's pass the voice outside Amiga channels. We have 2 weeks to collect the money and there are lots of former Amigans on alien Operating Systems sites who could donate.

You mean like this (https://twitter.com/jeriellsworth/status/585144216596119553)?

@weirdami
Jeri signed up as well for a banquet ticket and so has Joe Torre and his wife Leslie.
Took some time to review the site at the Computer History Museum. It's an amazing space and we are very lucky to be able to get it for this event. A great part of the CHM is they have an incredible collections so while visiting the Amiga 30th visitors can also visit the museum exhibits. No need to worry about what to do for 2 days :)

Considering how every year I've wanted to make the AmiWest event and never have, I figure the 30th anniversary event is one I simply cannot miss. But I have a limited budget on which to travel and could use either some advice as to reasonable hotel accommodations or another attendee with whom I could bunk.
-
I just pledged, don't want to miss this exciting event.

With all the luminaries present (assuming it happens), is there any chance of posting some questions in the hope of getting them answered by the people who "were there"?

Do what I do. To find a hotel in the area, go to
http://www.hotels.com
Input "Mountain View, CA" and the date(s) that you will need a room. Click on SEARCH. You will be presented with a list of hotels. Along the left side of the screen, there is a sidebar. Click on Landmarks, and a list will drop down. Check off "Computer History Museum." The list of hotels will then refresh, this time with all the hotels from the nearest to the farthest in distance from the Computer History Museum.
You don't have to book through Hotels.com; you can use another travel site, like Trivago.com or Booking.com, but the list of hotels will give you an idea of what there is.

Thanks for the Internet lesson :flak: :P
ANYWAY, I have already done the research to find the expenses, which is how I knew it was going to hit me hard in the wallet. I got a travel agency customer to book me. They couldn't do any better than what I found on my own, but their booking system allows me to spread the costs between now and July, so that helps. I would rather have gone my way (would be about 6,000 miles in SkyMiles which would bring me up to a free trip,) but I have to think about budget right now. Which was also why I asked if anyone local knew about anything special -- I know two hotels in my are which aren't listed in the big names but are, well, cheap but livable enough for a few days.
Anyway, I'll be there. I'm close enough to the museum to make it worth my while.

To get a ticket, just choose one of the Kickstarter levels that includes a ticket as the reward and donate to the Kickstarter project. Simple.

Not to start a flamewar here or anything, but those only say "One ticket to stretch goal Exhibition Hall". No mention about how anyone who, for whatever reason, doesn't want to back it on Kickstarter but would still like to attend, can get a ticket. So I can see where it could be confusing. Are tickets going to be sold at the door? Now that they have sufficient funding to actually have the event, will additional tickets be sold through any other means? Buy 'em through a website? That sort of thing I think that's what he's asking.
Disclaimer: I backed it through the Kickstarter and think everyone else should, too. But I know some people don't want to use that site, for whatever reason. :p
-

Guess I won't bother if tickets cannot be bought outright. Real shame, looks to be a good event.
There's plenty of people that dislike Kickstarter for a number of valid reasons, and I'm one of them. I couldn't care less about stretch goals, t-shirts, stickers, shout outs, funny hats, secret handshakes or any other Kickstarter gibberish. I have no need for t shirts or stickers, they would literally end up in the trashbin.
I just want to buy a ticket, lol. I don't understand why things must be so complex.

It's the final day for the kickstarter. We are sitting at 104% funded with 164 backers.
First, we made it! Commodore died in 1994, Escom, Gateway, and Amiga Inc have all run with the torch and fell. Yet, we, the Amiga Community, are still going. I recently came across a great article (http://www.filfre.net/2015/03/the-68000-wars-part-1-lorraine/) that pointed out that John C. Dvorak liked to say that "Amiga users were actively delusional." Here we are in 2015 successfully community funding the 30th anniversary. We are a global community of committed compassionate users who feel strongly about how they compute. Thank you all, to all our backers, to the more than 3000 people who watched the video, to everyone who uses the Amiga still, to everyone who remembers when computing was fun, and to everyone who is wishing us well.
Second, we have received comments about the size of the stretch goals. With any kickstarter campaign setting the funding targets and stretch goals is one of the hardest parts. You can't know how successful the campaign will be till it's launched so you have to go with what you think will work. One thing about the Amiga is there are always surprises. Our two stretch goals of Internet streaming and a 2 day exhibit hall will not end with the kickstarter. If someone backs the campaign at the $60 level we will honor the 2 day event ticket.
Third, every dollar counts. We have so many crazy ideas on how to make this the best birthday a computer ever had but it takes money to make it happen. The more money we make here the better the event will be.
Last, this might be your only opportunity to show your friends a youtube video of Amiga 1000 serial #1 thanking you for backing the kickstarter. This is not a promise that such thing will happen... but it could.
Thank you,
Bill "tekmage" Borsari

I have agree. This my main gripe with kickstarter for this type of event. Even if it costs me more, I would rather have the option of buying a ticket.
So, as far as I'm concerned, this is another mark against Kickstarted.
-
News from Tekmage in the latest Kickstarter update -- "The big news I’m happy to share is that we will have a two day exhibit hall. You will recall that the kickstarter had a stretch goal to to expand the banquet to include a two day hall. We missed that goal during the kickstarter but a sponsor stepped up so we can expand the event."
Even if it costs me more, I would rather have the option of buying a ticket.
"We are also going to be releasing more tickets for sale. These tickets will come in the form of a $100 for the banquet, $40 for two days of exhibit hall, $20 for one day, and $60 for a family pass."

You do realize that it's because of the Kickstarter that we're even having this event, right? Otherwise they wouldn't have been able to fund it to even start prepping for the event. Imagine, for them, the alternative: they manage to find some benefactor to front the $20,000 for the event with the idea that they'll "make it up in ticket sales". But because nobody has joined the Kickstarter, there's no financial incentive for them to go (in other words, because I helped on the Kickstarter I'm more inclined to go now, but either way they've got my money to help put on the event). One thing leads to another, they don't sell even close to enough tickets to recoup their $20,000, and some poor sap is now broke and/or never going to fund another event again.
IMHO Kickstarter is the only way to go for things like this.
I'll put it another way: have you ever been in a band that had to sell tickets yourself in order to get paid for playing a show? Say you're driving everywhere, promoting the heck out of your event, but only manage to sell seven tickets. Everyone else says "Oh, I'll be there, I'll buy one at the door". But then the day of the show comes and they're too busy shampooing their cat, or they oversleep, or they're watching something on TV, and can't be bothered to show up to their friend's gig. Ipso facto, band doesn't get paid, no beer money, and they're not likely to have any more gigs any time soon.
Money up front or no gig. That's the way the world works, kapeesh? :)
-
I guess one other way to do it would be to say "we need to sell at least 100 tickets by 1 month in advance or else we can't afford to put on the gig", but then that looses all the flair and co-marketing Kickstarter provides. People can get excited about a Kickstarter. They don't get excited about "Oh, I bought a ticket to this thing but not enough other people did so it got cancelled, transaction refunded on my credit card, end of story." See? Not as fun. :P
-

I think you used very bad example. If the band has no confidence to sell tickets it probably should quit playing.

You're oversimplifying a complex ecosystem.

Yeah there is a special type of person that knows what they don't like, but not what they like. Applies to many things not just analogy bashing.
-
LOL. So they sent out an email to all backers saying "Additional tickets are now available for purchase!" with a web address link to buy them. I seriously had already hit Ctrl+C to copy, and was about to Ctrl+V paste the information into here, when I read the line about "First, this information is not for public release."
GAAAAAH.
Life is short. I don't know why people intentionally do things to make it so much more difficult, LOL.

I just booked.
Look for the ASDG or Elastic Reality jacket (whichever one still fits).

Got into town early today and already had a great time visiting the NASA Ames Research Facility right up the street from the hotel. I'm a big NASA geek, probably almost as big as I am an Amiga geek, haha. ;)
So what're all you party people up to before the event? I might hit up SanFran, the bridge, the Hornet museum, or maybe drive down the coast a little ways and visit the Monterey Aquarium. I lived there as a kid but was too young to enjoy any of it, you know how that goes. ;)
I really didn't think I'd be able to make it out here, my office called twice, once while I was still over Texas, and the second time before I even left the SJC terminal. Apparently everything is falling apart and I'm not even gone 24 hours, yet. Oh well, as they say in IT Crowd, I'm just going to respond to all their calls with "Did you try turning it off and back on again?" :D
Shame I don't think very many people going to the event are members of this forum? Oh well, I guess I will just be talking to myself, but that's nothing new!

Definitely! Was already taking pics all around the NASA place today. Including one totally jet-lagged selfie. ;) It was a tough call, did I want to look like a dork and wear my Orion (http://www.nasa.gov/exploration/systems/orion/index.html) shirt to visit the NASA place, or an even bigger dork and wear my "Endurance: Space Exploration" (from the movie Interstellar) shirt? The latter won out. Also check out this awesome computer they had there. ;)

I will be arriving in San Jose tomorrow. Any Amigans getting together Friday night before the main festivities?

I'm not a beer drinker, but the menu looks promising. I'm game. Like you I'm three hours ahead, so "dinner time" for me is 4pm local time (right after check-in,) but a 7pm-ish meet-up would be good fourth-meal time.

I'll PM you my phone #! :)

Let's make it an unofficial gathering for anyone who wants to come out. Could be fun!
I'm gonna to make myself conspicuous: I'll be wearing a black Futurama shirt with the "Slurm" logo. And probably the only guy wearing jean shorts.
Until then, I landed with a terrible headache so I'm going to drug up and sleep it off.

Oh, and I brought some stuff to get autographed. Obvious targets are obvious ;)

Man, only here a couple days and I'm already getting into trouble. Scolded for smoking (outside, on a patio, where all the non-smoking signs were posted on a single wall behind me), and flipped off by a trolley operator for taking a picture. ;)
Oh well, at least I got to explore this, this morning:

This reminds me of the USS Lexington I visited a few years ago. I don't blame you for doing a spot of site seeing and exploration. Looks as though you're having a brill time. :)

Here y'all go. "a few" photos from today. Batch upload, mostly unsorted, speakers/presenters, hardware pr0n, etc. RJ Mical and Dave Needle should have their own comedy tour, those guys are hilarious! I hope one of the guys who recorded video shares it here. :)

What?!?! Kiki was there, and I missed her?! That's what I get for being behind the videocamera all day.
Thanks for the photos,

Thanks! Some great pictures :-) It must have been great to see such a varied selection of Amiga machines and hear those amazing speakers.

You need to hire a sidekick to operate the camera for you.

Had a great time at the 2nd day of Amiga30 today. So many great moments, but if I had to try to pick one favorite, it would probably be talking with a guy playing Defender of the Crown on CD32 and realizing it was Jim Sachs. I was kind of starstruck when I realized who it was, I think I said something along the lines of "So you must be really good at this game". Haha. :p
Another favorite moment would probably be watching @LoadWB buying up about 400 show t-shirts. ;)
Afterward made it out to hike in some of those beautiful rolling hills that anyone who's driving around here has seen. Pics don't do them justice, but I'll throw one on to make folks who didn't come out here jealous. :)
And here's a link to today's pics: https://www.flickr.com/photos/oldsmobile_mike/sets/72157656341352156
And a short video of Joe Torre reading his "Ode to Boing" poem: https://youtu.be/NvtIKLgMT1w
@eliyahu - feel free to copy these links to your "master post", also. :)
