@Matt_H

I would like to thank you for showing me the link. I just want to ask a question about this software? Does this software just play video directly regardless of the quality or it simply converts the images into an Amiga format that can be played by any Amiga player easily? If it converts the images what about the audio? Would I lose the audio in the process or would it convert the entire movie for me so that I can run it on my Amiga without any problems?

Thanks in advance.

I actually don't know - haven't used it. Sorry!

Hey there AmigaClassicRule.

The internal IDE in the A1200 is a bit tricky since many factors are used, accelerator card, scsi.device driver, drive etc but the "max speed" would be around 2,5MB/s but expect 1-2MB/s which if I have counted correctly will be enough for the kind of bitrates you will watch on your Amiga 1200.

But if you want to upgrade you could get your hands on a accelerator card with SCSI and if that fails the FastATA controllers are a good option.
Tho if I where you I would go for the Ide FixExpress instead, it's cheep and double the speed (atleast) of the internal IDE in the A1200.

So you have a few options to chose from, but first find the quickest accelerator card you can get if your planning on watching movies, then decide what road you want to go with the hard drive controllers.

I could be wrong with my bitrate calculations but I think that you will be all right with a accelerator card and the internal IDE.
I am not a video buff so video is not my strongest area of knowledge.

Edit: Well it's 05:54am right now and im quite tired, so ill run along to bed before my wife wakes up ;) ill get back to you when I wake up :)

@som99

Chipram can easily go at 7MB/sec.  So if you have a hard drive controller that can load 7MB/sec without bogging down the CPU then you can do fantastic looking HAM8 videos.

I get like 1MB/sec on my plain IDE controller.
I get like 2MB/sec on my IDEfix97
My friends get like 4MB/sec on their SCSI controller on their accelerator card.

How much speed are you getting on your FastATA contoller?

How much cpu power does it burn when loading?  100%?

Hey there ChaosLord :)
Sure would be sweet but he will need a nice accelerator to do any decent videos :)
I don't have a FastATA I am planning on getting one as soon as possible but right now I only got a 4xEIDE buffered interface as you can see in my build log, just ran a test and my read speed is 2.44MB/s wich im quite happy with for now.

Also im using an 4GB PATA SSD instead of a CF or HDD, mostly due to it's small physical size but also it has faster access time then my CF/w Adapter had which is noticeable even when using the Amiga.

But I really want a FastATA in the near future :)

beans & ham

Thanks for sharing NovaCoder, tho using HAMP requires quite some work to convert every single video file to ham, so would not be doable in the long run if you are planning on watching series on your Amiga :/

Is there a window app that does it automatically. If there is what is it called. By the way I do not mind if it is done by software easily and it is just matter of time consuming.

What about HAMP then? Can I just download any normal video from the internet in AVI format and type HAMP.RUN videoname.avi and bang it goes full screen on my Amiga 1200 AGA playing in HAM color with audio or I need to convert the video from HD quality in AVI to a format that Amiga 1200 can handle and HAMP play it?

HAMP can only play files that are its own particular format. To produce the file you need to make an uncompressed AVI and an uncompressed WAV and then run the converter program on a PC.

tools are here: http://www.hyakushiki.net/junk/avi4hv.zip
if you run into problems getting it to work there is some guidance here:

Thhhhhhaaankkk yooooouu sooo much.

By the way how fast is the transfer rate of an external DVD USB hooked into USB sub of Amiga compared to it`s internal IDE?

You are using USB subway on the clockport? Then you will get speeds in line of 150-200KB/s so internal is faster depending on what drive used.

Played around with RiVA and MPEG/AVI files, watched 10 minutes of a Andromeda episode in 176x144 @ 15fps, ran ok, not perfect but ok on my 030, would be watchable if your not to picky ;)

Riva is the program that Cobra wrote!  It is great if you have an 060.  I inspected his Asm code and give it an A+++

And please don't try to watch videos over USB.  USB is horribly inefficient and slow.  USB 1 and USB 2 were made to be cheap not good!

RiVA is great, if you are not picky and shrink the video a lot and cap the frames per second at less then 15 you can watch movies even on a 030 ;)

Then it is settled. I will get 68040 card make sure it have lots of RAM first. Then I will change the file system to help improve HD performance. With my 4000 rpm HD and following the tutorial I should be able to convert the video to work with hamp. I will make a website where people can download the converted video for Amiga. This way people will have already video format for their system. I will also do video convert at request.
