Sharp Zaurus Scores Low
« on: July 12, 2002, 05:55:56 AM »
According to a reader survey done by a top PC magazine, Sharp's handheld was pretty unappreciated.  The only plusses from this were that AmigaAnywhere was not mentioned, the report citing that the handheld was "Linux-fueled", and the only words used to describe the handheld was "handheld that most vexed users".

The poll was done to analyze technical service and reliability of product, with all the usual suspects present (Gateway, Dell, IBM, etc).

The categories included Laptops, Desktops, Cameras and Handhelds - which is of course where the Zaurus comes in.

That's what they get for not installing DE by default.

>Customer confusion - repair request

Hi
Japanese product usually have poor manuals and poor user interface. Unless you read the manual carefully, you cann't operate the device properly. Perhaps they should re-design the user interface and re-write the manual.  Perhaps they should use LinuxDA interface.

Linux DA's website.

Most Japanese customers prefer to buy new gadget, if something goes wrong (unless under warranty), because the repair cost is extremely expensive, and the product is not as reliable as products for US market.

I forgot to mention few more of the good bits...

a/The users polled said MS sucked at both handhelds and internet service..
b/and this should please Red.. AOL sucked too.

So anyone out there still think that MS can rule the roost for all time.. not me that's for sure.. because as Red said.. IBM were a similar company to MS in the 70s.. a large, bloated, underhanded and dirty corporation.. and now their position in the home market is pretty much dead.

In fact it's sort of ironic that IBM's other sources of income are the reason they are still a top company.. why?  because it was an IBM CEO that said that desktop PCs were irrelevant and would never catch on.. or words to that effect.  And guess what.. as far as IBM are concerned desktops are pretty much irrelevant.. :-)

So MS are finally being dissed by PC owners as well as the usual alternative OS and Network Administrator sources.. more of this please.. :-)

PS.. wouldn't it be cool if sometime in the future people asked the following..

a/Why do you call those things that popup Windows dad?
b/Why do you call computers IBM PC compatibles dad?
c/I really can't stand this Amigorola monopoly of the PC market.. why can't one of the alternative OSs or processors make it any more?

:-)

I have a Zaurus and I can promise you, it rocks!
Lucky me, my work bought me one.

There are some difficulties getting it to sync with
Linux (I can't use AmigaOS at work so better the
devil you know..), that's why PC magazines don't
rate it. But once you have sorted it out, it is actually
a lot better than syncing with Windows. I can get full
net connectivity by running a few scripts:
on Windows the device manager thingy gets locked up
if you don't cleanly unmount it and if you want full
net connectivity it's major hassle.

The main problem for it is the QT based syncing software,
which isn't up to much. When 3rd party sync software
becomes available then most of the problems will be solved.

As for AmigaDE, if they have a Linux port I don't see any reason why AI couldn't cross compile it to the Zaurus with a few twiddles. If DE isn't on the Zaurus, I would blame AI
not Sharp.

cheers

BTW: Amiga.org looks quite good in Opera at 320x240 !

DE is on the zaurus, you can even download it from somewhere on Sharp's site I think.
Thing is Sharp didnt include it with the initial zaurus package and dont support you if you install it.

The above is just from my memory of news items read here over the last few months.  Perhaps someone who has a Zaurus could tell us of their DE experiences.

AFAIK AmigaDE has never been given away free
and I can't imagine AI doing so.

If you do have a link to a free AmigaDE then please
post it (legal of course).

Unfortunately you cannot download the DE from Sharp anymore.  I can tell you though that I'm still very happy with my Zaurus (though I will be happier when DE /is/ released for it).

I'm using Sharp's Qtopia ('QT') for synchronization with Windows and agree that it is lacking.  It's functional, but definately not a 'pretty' package.

Hi
A security team had found a security hole with Linux OS on Zaurus PDA. I hope they can fix the problems soon.
Is there any "security hole" on Amiga DE for Zaurus?
