thanks for that Colani1200!

Now here's me looking for a little hardware gem like that, but the ones on ebay seem too expensive. Guess I'll have to strike it lucky some day! Thanks again and have fun!

Hello amigean,

there are a couple of manufacturers that offer serial device servers. If you're intending to buy one, you have to look for a model which supports "modem mode". This means that it accepts ATD commands with an IP address instead of a telephone number. The Amiga will use the serial device server like a normal modem on the serial port, the only difference is that you "dial" an IP address instead of a telephone number. The serial device server will open a telnet connection to that IP address. Personally, I am using a Lantronix UDS100 I got for € 1,50 off ebay. ;-)

On the software side, I use JR-comm 0.99a as terminal client which worked best for me, I am still evaluating other programs though. There is a later version of JR-comm (v 1.02) that I tried aswell, but it crashes when you're trying to use the dialer / telephone book with IP adresses. If somebody has suggestions for other terminal programs, feel free to comment. But keep in mind I am using a stock A500 with Kickstart 1.2, no hard drive and 1 MB RAM. ;-)

PS: Does anyone know a telnet gateway to IRC (freenode)? Or maybe a BBS that sports IRC connectivity?

that serial device server thingy sure is clever! Is it something like this? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-RS232-RS485-to-TCP-IP-Ethernet-Serial-Device-Server-module-/251126300546?pt=UK_Computing_Other_Computing_Networking&hash=item3a784b3f82

Can you post a picture of your hardware setup / comment on software configuration? Thanks!
