FPGA Replay Case
« on: March 19, 2011, 02:28:17 PM »
Hi guys,

I have decided to design a housing for the FPGAArcade Replay.
Some of you maybe remember I did a few runs of  minimig housings.
There will be two kit versions of cases including spacers and bolts.
The cases will be made from Plexiglas just like the minimig cases.

Versions:

1. For the FPGAArcade Replay mainboard.

2. One for the FPGAArcade Replay Including the 060 daughterboard.
This version will include a sunroof/hole for the processor so the heat sink can vent out the top op the case (only the square heat sink will be supported)

********* ********** UPDATE ********* **********

The first prototype for the FPGAARCADE is ready ;-))

This is the version for use with the FPGAARCADE mainboard only (so the mainboard without the daughterboard from Yacube)

There are two set options:
Set 1 AMI: Amiga     Set Complete set including spacers and bolds Including Amiga Text and boingball logo (see picture nr.1).
Set 2 UNI: Universal set NONE logo's Complete set including spacers and bolds (see picture nr.2)

I can supply more logo's in the future but we will see.

If you are interested in one of this sets let me know I will keep a list of peoples interested.
The minimal units I have to get is 25 before the production can take place.
If The 25 units are confirmed I will e-mail ALL for payment then the production will start (I WILL DELIVER as I did in the past just look up the minimig cases thread)

Cost:
Set UNI Universal set E 28,50 shipment E 12,00
Set AMI  Amiga      Set E 36,00 shipment E 12,00

The case design including Yacube’s daughterboard is not begun yet because I don’t have any measurements.
I will contact MikeJ or Yaqube if there is progress in rerouting the daughterboard for the CPU placement on the new daughterboard.

***** Update 16-5-2011 *****

Okey boys and girls,

After some e-mail swapping between MikeJ and me there are some changes here.
MikeJ has ask me if I want to use his original fpgaarcade logo on the case's (let me think ;-) YEEEEEEEEEEEES !!!!  )
So here is a update from the case on drawing, the quality of the product will be the same as the pictures on page one, so only the engraving will change.

The picture is for the amiga version the Universal version is the same like this without the amiga logo, DUhu..

The 060 daughterboard version will also include this logo and some other stuff ;-)  Daughterboard version pending….

Excellent, I really liked the Minimig design you made for its simplicity, functionality and elegance.  I'm still planning on putting my FPGA Arcade into a keyboard, but considering the size of board, a case like yours might be the more practical option.

I look forward to seeing your prototype.  :)

FPGA Arcade in a tablet like case would be really nice... Out of bugdet certainly...

Nice work!
So you have the ability to build plexigas case?
May i PM you about a project i have?

I hope that someone will find, or design a fully enclosed mini case for the FPGAArcade Replay board(s) with a matching back plate for the ports.  Your idea for duplicating the plexiglas case like the one for the MiniMig is fine for many people, but some will want a more conventional case design.

I don't remember if anyone has asked MikeJ already, but what are the chances of running the FPGAArcade Replay from battery(ies) to make it some kind of portable device?  I am not a fan of the new touch screen tablets, but would not mind seeing someone turn the FPGAArcade Replay into a laptop design with a proper keyboard & LCD.
How are you helping the Amiga community? :)

I have a widescreen touch LCD panel on a daughterboard. I'll post some pics of it running at somepoint. I did the board to prove I could talk to the LCD and it looks pretty good.
It's a lot more work to turn it into a portable device.

If you can provide a regulated 5V supply the board will run fine from batteries, it has a 2 pin header for ext 5V.

Looking forward to your pictures.  Making it into a portable device is low priority and could be a project for some much later date.

P.S. MikeJ, I have a 68060RC60 waiting for this project, so I hope you will consider making the daughter card with a socket, instead of trying to source all of the 68060's yourself (or if you don't want to do that, I hope you will accept letting customers send you their 68060 chips to be installed onto their daughter cards and remove the price of your 68060 from the price of the daughtercard).  I am working on selling some of my Classic Amiga gear to raise the money to pay for the FPGAArcade Replay board and daughtercard, so I am as anxious as everyone else for these to become available.  Thanks again for your great work on this project Mike.
How are you helping the Amiga community? :)

The daughter board is being driven by Jakub, but if it all works out then it may only be available with a socket - unless I can find a big stack of 060s.

I have made some investigation into an FPGA module which fits the pinout of an 060 to allow a "turbo" softcore. I can't imagine at this point emulating a full 68060, more of a very fast 020.

In regards to the Core, would you say that the curent softcore of the replay board is below, the same or better than the current MiniMig core when it comes to compatibility ?

I'm thinking that gutting a broken A1200 would be really appealing, if hooking up the keyboard isn't too hard, and sorting out the connectors wouldn't look too ugly.. I always did want an A1200 (my upgrade from my A500 and A2000 ended up being an A3000 instead, and that was my last classic)

Sounds like it'd be worth talking to the Natami team... Maybe they'd license their N68050. Since they're not after making any big profits, mainly just offsetting their development and production cost, perhaps they'd be up for cutting a good deal.

All NatAmi code is written in AHDL which isn't compatible with the A-Replay enviroment at all. It's not even VHDL compatible.

Today I received my FPGAArcade board (thanks Mike)...
So I can start designing the case...
Any sugestions for the engraving on top of the case ??, it's now time to say so...

That's assuming you put it on the same FPGA as the rest of the cores on the base board, but it sounded to me like mike was talking about a separate 68060 pin-compatible module with just the CPU core to plug into the daughterboard in place of a real 68060. In that case what's in use for the base board doesn't matter.

vidarh, Sure, but either AHDL or closed licenses is a pain.
