It's offical, the iPad idea came from Commodore
« on: September 05, 2010, 05:09:59 AM »
We can remain silent no more about this ultimate injustice. Evidence from a 1994 issue of Amazing Computing page 96.

Commodore will turn in the grave about this!

ROTFL. Its an April Fools day prank from '94. Just amazing they got so many things right, albeit a few years too early.

FTA: "there is some concern that CBM is spending far too much effort in marketing their products".

With a line like that, of course its a hoax! :-)

A 1994 article pranking 2004? Odd. Odder still the inclusion of Mel Gibson. He's really stuck his foot in it lately.

Well you could also say Gateway had the idea for an Amiga web pad back in 99

By '99, the "pad" concept was well known and a "hot" topic, so it's not so strange, though none of them took off. Personally I was working for a startup that had a prototype webpad in 1998, and we were not the first. Nokia, for instance had one around the same time.

There was some talk of a machine labelled the A1000PN around 1990ish....may have been in an editorial for AUI

iPad is a toy, doesn't do anything you couldn't do with a P3 based Fujitsu ST3400 anyway lol

Some of the "observations" in the article were amazingly prescient for 1994, with some just barely missing the mark -- in particular, the dual-cellular line for voice and data is pretty spot-on: AT&T 3G, for instance, does allow data and voice in the same unit by merit of voice in one band and UMTS/HSDPA in a different band, while many other non-GSM carriers do not allow voice and data simultaneously.  (AT&T EDGE has/had the capability within the same band, but with 3G forthcoming at the time provisioning was never specified, at least for public consumption.)

Classic, indeed.  Happy April Fools.  Hey, anyone working on 2011's AFD Amiga/Commodore prank?

Oh, and one for the road:

Hmmm but you should never assume people in the distant past were stupid, this applies just as much to pre-deluvian civilizations as it does to 80s/90s tech dreamers ahead of their time.

In 1982/3 Computer and Video Games magazine (UK) had an article about how gaming would change in the future, one of the most striking predictions was that people would play games with players all around the world by a network connecting home computers together allowing you to play a 2 player game with people on the other side of the planet. The 'internet' wasn't invented yet but they hit the nail right on the head. In the late 80s The Games Machine magazine had an interview with a company doing a game for a Saturday morning kids show using Keying and Genlocking hardware hooked up to an Amiga that was sort of like Eyetoy. The head designer said one day this is how all games would be played, you superimposed onto the game world using overlaying video hardware and video cameras and your body movements being the game control input/play mechanics.....and the next big thing after Wii is set to to be Microsoft's project Natal.....which is just Eyetoy on steroids.

There were some very radical thinkers in the 80s ;)
