I just wanted to add my thanks to everyone involved in this project. I think it's just brilliant.

@giZmo350

I think I'm qualified to say that our icons would load a lot faster if we upgraded to Boings Bags 3 & 4 plus FBlit is built in so that would save RAM on AGA screen modes! I can't say I've got my head around what the real world benefits of upgrading to OS 3.1.4 components would be though Im sure there would be some given the effort to incorporate them into a OS3.9 system. Maybe the OS3.1.4 physical copy should come with a OS3.9 'upgrade' option?

I made a script to help update 3.1, 3.5 or 3.9 with 3.1.4.

It is in Aminet.
Make a backup first, and then execute it.

That's great but should we upgrade with Boing Bags 3 & 4 first?

my gut feeling tells me NOT to install BB3&4. However, OldsmobileMike swears by them (I think he's the patch king!). So, I guess I'll just try it with & without BB3&4.

It shouldn't be too time consuming (or dangerous) as I'm lucky to have one of these to quickly make a backup to another CF card. I probably won't get to it right away as I'm going to wait to buy OS3.1.4 with a ROM chip when they're available. But I'll surely post results when I do!

No, there is nothing in the boing bags we haven't fixed otherwise. The components in 3.1.4 are more recent versions of the Os components than those in the boing bags.

@Thomas Richter

So has OS 3.1.4 incorporated FBlit into the core system then?

No, please no! FBlit is too buggy for any practical use, so keep hands off! If you want a working software blitter - P96 has one.

What happened in this direction, however, is that intuition is now smart enough to detect itself whether it can place icons in FastRAM. There is no need to (and it is certainly not adivisble to) change the default allocation policy for the workbench. It all works correctly right away, and icons will be in fast if the system allows.

Surely it has its uses transferring some graphics into fastmem rather than Chip Mem?

Does that go for BB1&2 also?

Now we need official update for 3.9 :), something like 0S3.9.5.

Other idea... I know it this will sound "crazy" but is there any way that Amiga could detect CD-ROM without any other external drivers (considering there is a HDD/CD-ROM on one tape, 4xeide or other solution). I assume there would not be space in ROMs do to it.

THAT would be something :)

Ha!  I'm gonna lose that title since it's been weeks since I've even had a chance to turn any of my Amiga's on, and I haven't been following this development nearly as closely as I should be.  :(

That being said I never had any issues with 3.9 + all the BB's, and I used to spend way more time than I'd want to admit hunting down the latest and most esoteric versions of patches and libraries that I could find, all in the name of "performance and tuning".  Call it the old hot-rodder in me, I suppose.  ;)

Maybe when the ROM's come out I'll have time to test 3.1.4.  That's what I'm telling myself, anyway...

The devil is in the detail. Yes, the built-in scsi.device (which speaks IDE, not SCSI) does now support ATAPI, and hence can load from CDROM. Yes, the Os-supplied CDFS is ROM-able and could therefore run from ROM if needed. I have not checked ROM space, but you should also understand that many CDROMs are actually connected to custom host-adapters, and *they* would require a modification to boot from CD as well.

So there is a link missing between the host adapter on one side, and the CDFS on the other side. For traditional file systems, this gap is filled by the RDB, which sits on the harddisk and which is required to be loaded by host adapters, then mounts the file systems and carries the boot process over.

But a standard ISO CD does not have an RDB on it that would mount a device, and could continue booting, and the standard host adapter neither looks for RDBs on optical devices. ISO images either depend on a (PC-based) boot floppy emulation, or the (PC-based) El-Torito boot mechanism, and there is no support for something like this in Amiga-land, leave alone any standard that comes close to it.

Hence, adding the CDFS to ROM does not solve the problem. It would require a modification of host adapter firmware. Given that most (if not all) vendors that made such adapters are out of business, chances are pretty slim that this would ever happen.
