So what exactly is the difference between the various ROMs.

I have an A1000 that I'd like to twinkick
But I'm also going to install vampire on it later on.

So would I need two different versions or..?
Not to speak of trying it out in  UAE
Will one version fail where anothe one works and vice versa?

I really would like to what the differences are

So what exactly is the difference between the various ROMs.
The difference is which subsystems are included in the ROMs, in particular for hardware-near components. Unfortunately, CBM did not follow their own design principles and hard-coded a couple of decisions. For example, the A4000 ROM contains a RAM-Test for static column DIMMs that would, in this form, crash any other machine. Some machines include a "real" scsi.device, such as the A3000, some an IDE "emulation layer" such as the A4000.

At least, we have now a generic AGA/ECS graphics that is exactly the same on both machines.

I have an A1000 that I'd like to twinkick
But I'm also going to install vampire on it later on.
Well... there is no A1000 ROM, so we cannot guarantee that things will work on this machine, but it is quite likely (actually, very likely) that the A500 ROM will do, all provided the machine even takes a 512K ROM.

The vampire is just another beast. What the vampire team currently recommends is to go for the A1200 ROM. So for your particular setup, you need two ROMs, yes. A500 is a 16-bit ROM, A1200 is a 32-bit ROM, and their contents is different due to differring machine components.

Will one version fail where anothe one works and vice versa?
That is very likely, indeed. It all goes back to a couple of not-so-wise decisions and not following the own engineering guidelines in-house at CBM, and ignoring the same guidelines later on for the vampire. Sorry for that, but we cannot fix that.

We didn't test Cloanto ROMs, but they might work.

This irks me as the only ROMs available within the last year or so have been Cloanto ROMs (@amigakit). However, AOTL does sell Hyperion ROMs. I'm sitting on 3 Cloanto A500 3.1 ROMs and wish I had bought from AOTL now.

I realize that 3.1.4 ROMs are recommended for the updated OS but as it stands those are not available as yet. So using MapROM seems to be the only option at this time if using Cloanto ROMs.(?)

Has anyone tried OS3.1.4 with Cloanto ROMs yet?

Good to see that the Hyperion vs Cloanto conflict has affected the project.  :-\

Not really. I would just go for the default software installation, and LoadModule will take care of it. MapRom is not required for that. In fact, a physical ROM is not required for 3.1.4.

Of course, the usual disclaimer applies. How can a vendor give you a warranty for a product that was developed elsewhere and they have not tested with? 3.1.4 works with the original 3.1 ROMs, that is something we can ensure. I would be surprised if it would not work with Cloanto, but... no promises.

Thanks for the reply THoR.... I don't have any unrealistic expectations with this new OS3.1.4. However, I would think that this updated OS might present a predicament to any vendor selling Cloanto ROMs going forward (what ever complication that might be). Like you said, might not be a problem, but I was never happy buying Cloanto ROMs in the first place, especially when that's not what I ordered but received anyway. I know, not your fault.

Errr yea, I meant LoadModule.  :o

Ah, such as life....  I don't mean to rant.   ;)

I'm just going to wait to purchase until the new ROMs are available. Guess I'll use the Cloanto ROMs for mini hockey pucks! LOL

BTW, I highly recommend that anyone considering purchasing OS3.1.4 read the FAQ.txt first! Especially if you don't plan on purchasing the 3.1.4 ROMs. Very good information in there!

Apologies in advance for somewhat off topic, but I'm concerned about this:

@bubbob42

Would you please do something about the facebook page.

By having the April posting as the last current legal status, how can one draw any other conclusion that you still have an issue re:

As of today "AmigaOS Workbench 3.1 (40.43) for desktop Amiga" is available again as digital download ! For now only in the European Economic Area but we are working to go worldwide again soon.

How does the above information "complement" the official website?

Sorry - I'm neither representing Hyperion nor am I part of Hyperion. Just a developer posting information because Hyperion cannot look after every forum.

The Facebook page will surely get an update in the next few days.

The update is made for the physical 68K based real Amiga machines, so that is what we promise where it works. No promises for the MiST, of course, but it would astonish me if it would not work.

It comes with its installation script that performs a clear install. Even though this is the recommended way of installation, you will then get a workbench that looks exactly like the 3.1 workbench.

Just tried it on my MiST running Minimig-Mist 1.2.3 Beta and it seems to work fine. I was able to boot both from the ADF and from a 4 GB .HDF which I had prepared in WinUAE.

When adding BestWB to the install, it crashes on the next boot (on the MiST but not in WinUAE). "Software Failure - ramlib #80000004". However that's not related to OS 3.1.4 itself of course, since that's a third party modification. I'm guessing it's adding something to the startup-sequence, Devs: or somewhere that's not compatible. Will have a look later.

Edit: Turns out the problem was 68020.library that BestWB installs. Removed that and it works great now. So if any of the other 5 people who own a MiST want to try it, that's what you have to do  :-*

Best guess - the SVX datatype? Please remove it. The 8SVX can play stereo samples just fine now.

I have a KS 3.1 for my 3000 that's been modified to allow for a 060 with FPU.  If I understand what's been posted, I don't need to change the ROM and can just use the disks and modules disk?  I'm fairly green on this stuff..

Yes, you can. The system will then go through one reboot on the coldstart to install the new modules.

I'm trying to make 1mb kickstart. Everything OK, but I just can't get new exec work. Everything else works, with bb2 exec, but if I try 3.1.4 exec it just doesn't work. Currently I have only tried with WinUAE.

Booted Amithlon using the 3.1.4 kickstart and 3.1.4 Workbench successfully.  Installed WB 3.1.4 inside WinUAE then compressed (.lha) the volume and moved it over to my Amithlon system.  Uncompressed it to a newly created volume (made bootable) and replaced the kickstart in smallird.gz with the A2000 3.1.4 kickstart.   I had to copy a few files over (Amithlon specific stuff) and modify the startup-sequence but it booted without issue.  The new intuition.library works fine as well allowing windows to be moved off the edges.  I have a LOT of work to make it similar to my OS 3.9 setup but I want to see how well it compares.

Amiga OS 3.1.4 question - I decided to to a fresh install on my A4000 Desktop with my Warp Engine. I have two big SCSI drive - 74 Gig and 300 Gig that both worked 100% on OS 3.9. With 3.1.4 I installed from floppy, changed my tooltype on HDtoolbox to warpdrive.device, and created a nice 4 Gig Workbench partition. OS installed just fine with no errors.
Now after booting up, HDToolbox sees my drives and I can partition them, but no matter what size I partition them formatting gives me a "Seek Failure" error and cancels the format. Tried different sizes, different drives, same error. Original 4 Gig works fine on my 74 Gig drive, but I can't format anything else. Possible bug with OS 3.1.4 with Warpengine?
Again, these drives have been working perfect with Amiga OS3.9.

No, possible bug in Warpengine. Please go, check the FAQ. Edit the partitions, set the "Direct SCSI" flag, save the partitions back, reboot, and all will be fine.
Or, if that is too much, install NSDPatch, it's on the installer disk. The latter I consider a kludge, but anyhow, it's your system, do as you like.

In 3.9 "NSDPatch" was hard-wired into SetPatch. It is no longer required, the FFS can speak SCSI itself if you ask for it.

Thank you, Thomas Richter! I honestly did not try the "Direct SCSI" Flag, although I did see it. I will try that right away. Thanks for the help.

Edit - checking the direct SCSI switch did the trick. All is well
