[Video] mother Tries out amigaOS Workbench 1.1 (1985)
« on: February 07, 2013, 01:02:51 PM »
My mum recently tried out one of Amiga's first operating systems from 1985... I've got to say, apart from lack of applications installed out of the box it was a pretty good operating system for its day. It had icons, resizable and drag able overlapping windows, color, multitasking. I think it actually beats windows 1.01 from 1985!

Anyways here's a video of my mum trying it out and attempting to perform a variety of tasks on it without help: http://youtu.be/d6mDXKU29w0

We do this same "do these tasks on this OS without help" tests on lots of operating systems both old and new. To compare amiga to other operating systems from around 1985 here are some more old systems she has tried:

Mac OS System 1.1 (1984): http://youtu.be/L7krm0_Oqg
Windows 1.01 (1985): http://youtu.be/UToIwIe6sSM

So my question for all of you is:

"If it was 1985 what OS out of the 3 mentioned above would you use?"

Remember that although the amiga had a lack of preinstalled applications more could still be installed that were better than applications for windows and Mac (as far as I have been told).

P.S if you wanna she more of these videos we have heaps more... Just check out our channel ;)

That sounds like WinUAE's emulated floppy sound.  You can adjust the volume to your preference but by default it's a little loud yet.
I actually like this feature of WinUAE, it really gives a feeling of working on an actual hardware Amiga.

What do you mean, which one would I use?  I was alive back then, and I did use* Amiga OS.  If I had to go back to 1985, even with hindsight of it eventually being a dead end, I'd pick an Amiga again, no doubt.  It was far and away the best system of its time.

(* Technically, I didn't use Amiga in 1985, but only because I was a broke kid, and couldn't afford to upgrade from my Commodore 64 to an Amiga until a couple years later...)

AGREED!!!!  And it doesn't make that noise every time you click on something, only when you access the floppy...

Which was pretty much any time you did anything on an Amiga 1000 with WB1.1.

Amiga forever was used to emulate this system and it made all those sounds by default...

This is set on turbo just because I didn't want the video to take too long and have my subscribers get bored watching it.

Did offices use an amiga 1000? How was the noise level?

First: I like your reviews - they are an interesting point of view.

I am curious what your mom will think when she tries the newer versions of the OS - e.g. she liked the constant systematical developement of the macs.

Regarding the floppy, it wasn´t nearly that loud in reality, especially in the offices there were other noisier things. And the floppy access wasnt´t every time, because some actions were done out of the memory after the first use/klick.

For sure it beats Windows 1 for the time and also MacOS I think. So for sure I would also use Workbench regardles knowing how things evolved later.

You forgot to change also the style of the pointer - this was funny and creative for me back in the time.

For me it would be interesting to see her testing the 1.3 (even if it is not very different but has more tools), then some kind of 2.xx then 3.1, then 3.9 and finally 4.1 (ok you have no HW I think that´s the problem, probably some one will lend it to you) - ok a lot of work for you but I think your mum will get used to and probably like it a little more ;-)

Here in Canada the Amiga 1000 was well respected and even viewed with awe by many, but it never really caught on in a big way in business.  Sure, it may have been used in small-scale workplaces, and most videography businesses probably had one, but you wouldn't have found a floor of cubicles where everyone had an Amiga.  Remember, even by 1985 not everyone had a computer on their desk (although we were getting pretty close).

But as to your "how was the noise level" question.  Even in school computer labs where there were lots of Amigas, it wasn't a problem. Your settings in WinUAE / Amiga Forever make the drive sound a LOT louder than it was in real life.  You can turn the emulated drive sound down by pressing F12 while in Amiga Forever and going into "sound" and turning the drive sound down.

Now, dot matrix printers ---- those caused disruption!

Regarding the floppy drive noise levels, the Amiga floppy is no louder than any other 3.5" floppy in other computers, and is greatly over exaggerated in your video. I noticed on the Windows 1 and MacOS System 1 videos there was no noise at all. This is false, they had physical media drives as well.
I really enjoyed watching these videos. It would have been nice to have seen some actual programs running on the Amiga though so that it could show off its 4096 on-screen colours and multitasking, with screen dragging and or screen switching, and with 4 channel digital stereo sound, all running at the same time.
The contrast between that and the Mac would surely sway your mum's opinion! Well, it would be like comparing B+W with colour.
Workbench doesn't come with any productivity software as standard. Users would have to purchase such software separately. ;)

You should have your mum play with GEOS on the C64.  A lot of people had a copy for their C64 back in the mid-1980s. In fact, I just read it was one of the best selling OS's of the 1980s.

I don't believe there was an actual Workbench 1.1. I thought it just started from version 1.2. Anything before that it was simply called Workbench and it wasn't until WB 1.2 was released that it was referred to as Workbench 1.1 or 1.0. The same way the Amiga 1000 was simply called "Amiga" and the 1000 was added later. Is this correct?

Edit: OK my mistake. There was 1.0 and 1.1 was just bug fixes.
