Do I own AmigaOS 3.9?
« on: December 28, 2003, 08:15:08 PM »
I purchased the AmigasOS 3.9 CD from SoftHut 3 years ago or so.  I sold the A1200 tower that I built and was including OS 3.9.  The eBay buyer said he had it already and not to bother including it, but I forgot and did include it.  Well - now I am rebuilding an A1200 tower and need OS 3.9 and his e-mail address no longer works (was going to get CD back).

So do I still own AmigaOS 3.9 as far as licensing goes?

Well, I definitely bought it - it seems more a matter of what it means for me to have effectively thrown my copy away (as in, no one will be using it).  I don't imagine I registered it on any website.

well then u dont own it:

1. u sold it
2. u never regged it.

a dilemma ;)

i advice u to just go out and get another one , its failry cheap and a good investment.

as soon as u have done that , register it and download Boingbag 1 and 2 from the os3.9 website (haage and partner)

good luck ..

pps:os3.5 is crap in my eyes , i know its an personal opinion and all but i bought that ...installed it and i hated it (crashed bla bla) so when os3.9 came i bought it and i installed it and i never wanted to go back to 3.1 etc..

Whats up with all the hate!

well you never had to actually register 3.9 like you did 3.5 as far as I know... Having said that in my honest opinion, if you are no longer in posession of the CD then you no longer own it and its time to buy another copy...

Actually, if we want to get technical about all of this, no one OWNS OS3.9 except Amiga.inc, we own the media it is on, and the boxes/documentation, but the OS itself we only licence, the £30 is the fee for that license.

Technically he could legitimately just pull a copy of the OS3.9 iso off the web and use that, as his licence is still valid - one copy for one computer (at any given moment). But without the proof of either the reciept from softhut or having registered, it would be increadibly difficult to prove that you do indeed still have that right, so it may well be in your best interest to simply purchase another copy of the OS just to be on the safe side of things.

ryu:check your os3.9 html manual :) , and yes i got kinda WOOOT aswell, with 3.5 u had the extra note in the box stating about registring ..but os3.9 came jin a jewel case only (anyone seen any diffent?) , infact we all know what haage said about the sales on 3.9 , and its no wonder they was bad if they expected to get registers with that system..

anyway i regged it so i am happy enough :)

if i have a registered copy of 3.9, am i free to sell it, or aren't i allowed to do this legally because it is licensed only to me?  :-?

i no longer need it anymore you see, its just the CD sitting here doing nothing

Actually it's my understanding that H&P own OS3.9 until it is bought back off them by Amiga Inc.
This has not happened, hence they still retain ownership.
This is one of the reasons Hyperion did not have access to OS3.9 source and had to revert to OS3.1
