OS3.5 Compared to OS3.9 (PCMCIA ethernet)
« on: April 30, 2006, 01:24:36 PM »
does 3.5 have programs like Miami (i think its called: Browser Software)

is it a good inteface when it comes to linking Amiga and PC via PCMCIA?

basically is it good for networking between PC and Amiga and is it READY-ABLE to connect to the internet?

It's called 'TCP/IP stack'.

AmigaOS 3.5 only comes with time limited demo version of Miami. You can't register it. The very same software is available in Aminet. Oh yes, AmigaOS 3.5 was marketed to include full TCP/IP stack. It never did.

AmigaOS 3.9 comes with illegal copy of Genesis.

If you want to stay legal (and have full unlimited network connectivity), the only solution for now is the GPL version of AmiTCP/IP 3.0b2 or if someone sells you used copy of AmiTCP/IP, Genesis or Miami[DX]).

you can use serial connection but is SLOW. the best choise is tcp/ip with a network card. something like this for a600/1200:
pcmcia netcard
A3040/25 AmigaOS 3.9
A1260BPPC AmigaOS 3.9/4.0
Sam440ep AmigaOS 4.1.2
PegasosII/G3 AmigaOS 4.1.2/MorphOS 2.7/Debian 5.0.7/SUSE 11.1
MacMini/G4 1.5 MorphOS 2.7/OSX 10.5.8
Long Live Amiga

If i am going to have bugs on my system,
at least let me keep the latest versions.

You can use a null modem cable and some terminal software(such as Hyperterminal on the PC and NComm on the Amiga) to transfer files between the two..but it's a lot slower than using a PCMCIA network card.
On schedule, and suing

Uhm, wouldn't downloading be transferring data to your Amiga?

Anyway with 3.5 you can get online.

And to compare it to 3.9 (topic title but nowhere in the post?); that has an TCP stack as well.

Difference:

OS3.5 has a time limited version of Miami and 3.9 a full (illegal) version of Genesis.

These are for using the TCP protocol!! You also need a browser. I know that OS3.9 comes with AWeb SE but don't know about 3.5...

I've tried AWeb and Voyager but IBrowse2.3 is what I use every day now. It's brilliant.

For networking you could try ParNet (faster than serial networking).

you know OS3.1 / 3.0 arent adapted to handling hdds over 4Gb (think it is) - is this just for physical amiga 2.5" hdd - can you still browse files on the PC via amigaOS (using PCMCIA)?

Also keep in mind that not all PCMCIA network cards are supported. If you're not sure, buy it from some Amiga dealer like amigakit.com.

There's a reasonable list of PCMCIA cards here, showing A1200/600 compatibility.  Of course, Amigakit supplies a software bundle as well.
Good good study, day day up!
