Does anyone have this site on CDs/DVDs?
They have some sort of "anti leech" protection so the whole site cant be copied with crawler, is there a way to bypass it?
Better sorry than worry.

Orange - I'd be grateful if you wouldn't try to download the entire site. The database is hosted at the personal expense of one person and built up from a great deal of work done by the team.

If you download the gigabytes of information you are eating into the site bandwidth in a big way. Furthermore, the database is being continually added to and incorrect data is being fixed; a download would just be a snapshot of a changing site.

I see..
Well, I wasn't trying to download whole of it in, say, one day. A site like that should have enough bandwidth so that it could be downloaded in couple of weeks/ one month.

If what you say is the sole reason, how about putting it into a big .rar and on emule network? That won't eat a lot of your bandwidth. (maybe just a bit in beginning)

I need offline access to it, and don't mind the updates&fixes 'cause it has already a lot of games

Why don't you put what you have now on DVD and sell it for the cost of media?
How large is it anyway?

If all of this is "undesirable" or whatever, how about archiving just textual data, without pictures, that can't be too large?
Better sorry than worry.

As you are obviously impressed by the HOL site, why not help support it, make a donation or give some of your time.  As Cody has said HOL has taken an exceptional amount of time to collect the mass of information it contains.  This info was compiled to be used by everyone who loves the Amiga, not for people to just steal  and keep it in there own private collection.

Maybe we have read you wrong and your reasons are truly selfless, perhaps you where worried such a great site would be destroyed by a freakyweaky accident and it would be lost forever.  Then you, having a copy of the whole site on DVD would be able to hand over your disk and save HOL from disaster.  I don’t know for sure but I think the HOL team have made previsions for such an occurrence so I don’t think they will need another back up of it.  Thanks for trying to help though.

So, you are calling me a thief now?  :pissed:
I'd say its you who is stealing information from Amiga games..
That information doesn't belong to you, unless you programmed all those games and draw those boxes in which they were sold.

Who gave you the right to scan copyrighted artwork?
Better sorry than worry.

True I'm just an Admirer of thier fine work.  And someone who wants to see the art form of computer games preserved for the future.

My opinions are purely my own and I am in no way involved with the HOL project, nor do I speak on behalf of it.  I just don’t want to see it abused.

@orange

I see no instance where anyone called you a thief, so chill out.  They do have a point though in that they put in all the effort to build a great site with a lot of great information.  As such, you should respect it and not try to "leech" (which in the American lexicon is akin to "steal") it.

In essence, if anyone called you a thief, you yourself did when you started this topic.

Hell, that site's so cool I should see if they want to partner with AO.  :)

Orange, I too want access to the HOL database. I have had a number of correspondance with members of the HOL team. Quite rightly they have said no to me at this point. They have put in a mammoth effort in producing their web site and would like to prevent people from ripping them off. However rather than bleet and moan about it, I have chosen to try and prove that my intentions for wanting access to HOL is in the best interest of the Amiga community. The result being that they have generously agreed to host my site and offer much needed support while I get it off the ground. So while my own site is going slower than planned, I'm sure they will give me the access I desire when the time is right.

The moral to this is simple. Don't ask for something as big as the HOL database without saying why you want it. If they believe your project is of benefit to the Amiga community and you are serious then I'm sure they will support you.

"Yeah, right"

subject changed, I never meant to leech anything, just copy whole site or at least all .htms .. :-D

I think everybody should have free access to ALL of the information on that site. Its obvious that we won't understand each other, so I'll just stop typing now
Better sorry than worry.

You have free access to all information in HOL, it's just not allowed to download the complete thing to your harddrive.

Besides, an offline version of HOL is already in development.
