If you want to use normal USB and/or power at the same time, maybe an extra screen, well then you need adaptors.
I am very sure, that those adaptors come in, at a lot more than $29.95.

Besides, being so thin, I guess durability is not something apple is to concerned about.

The problem with batteries, that are built in like that, is that they are very difficult to change once they die, which all batteries do sooner or later.
