Linux Mandrake 9.0 WOW!

wow! i just upgraded from mandrake 8.2(or 8.1 i cant remember) to 9.0, and i must say this is bloody good stuff indeed!

i try different versions of linux occasionaly & even *BSD, but when i first used mandrake a few years ago i fell in love!

mandrake 9.0 is A LOT better than i expected!
usually when you upgrade an OS, its a bit more bloated, a bit slower, and doesnt add all that much that is worthy of it being an upgrade
but mandrake 9.0 was different
it installed very quickly(from 2 CDs) without a problem, it booted very quickly, much quicker than the previous version, and just about every thing seemed faster
KDE 3.0 was new for me, before i used it i thought it would be bloated & slow, but it was actually very fast! my computer almost seems like a whole new machine
you know if you have a very small amount of ram, you get that disk 'thrashing' when the machine is constantly swapping pages of memory in & out? well upgrading to mandrake 9.0 was almost like adding more ram! my HDD is so silent now, ive yet to checkout the memory usage but it seems to be swapping a lot less now, probably not ALL due to KDE however
there were a few new features/programs that i liked, plus some things changed that i didnt like, but i suppose youve got to take the good with the bad
one thing i really like is the Mandrake Control Center - this makes so many things much easier to configure, including the screen resolution
this upgrade has fixed so many problems ive had before, so many errors and crashes that i dont have now

for anyone wanting to try linux i would definently reccomend mandrake 9.0 to anyone
if you already use linux, try it now!

I've tried madrake a few times since version 7 to 8.2, but never liked it, I've used Suse 5.2 and 7.3. I've been using RedHat 8.0 with apt-get installed for 3 or 4 weeks now since i decided to get rid of my "aquired" copy of windows xp for good. I must say it's very good once you installed apt/mp3/divx/dvd/nvidia drivers/Mozilla Xft/UADE for XMMS/Bastille. Reminds me of using my Amiga all those years ago. Can't put my finger on why though? Maybe it's because GNOME 2 is more responsive than the bloated KDE 3.

I done that too.  It looks great at first tho but then you find out that most of the good stuff has been removed and it all went downhill for me.

I tried to get IRC working (e.g Xchat) but with no luck.  Then I tried to get my graphics card working but it says it's not connected and it uses the default GeForce driver (which is slow).  Updating it made no difference.

I was not impressed and reverted back to 8.1....but will probably go over to RedHats latest version for better support.

mandrake 9 takes ages to boot compared to 8.1 i prefer suse its a much better. ;-)  :-?

Same here. I use Mandrake 9.0 at home and at werk. On my home machine I upgraded (a while back) from 8.1 and on my werk machine I upgraded (last week) from 8.2.  On my home machine it seems slightly faster, but at werk the improvement is massive.  It loads in less than half the time now.

I started using Mandrake over a year ago because I was told by an expert that it was good for linux newbies and at the time I was just that.  And I'm still using it now because it's grown on me like a rash.  It's all itchy and I love it...

see ive been using various versions of linux for years, especialy redhat, but mandrake was the first to work with my LAN card, so i stuck with it and loved it
red hat doesnt work for my machine BTW

I have to say that doesn't sound like Mandrake 9.0 to me. I'm not sure what "good stuff" has been removed, or why your xchat and drivers don't work properly, but they work fine here, and I'd say it's a considerable improvement over the 8.x versions. Certainly it is easier to manage than the older versions.

In fact I'd say that it's Red Hat who have been stripping lots of good stuff out of their distros.

I did a clean install of RedHat 8 on my C3 machine a week ago.  I couldn't get a stable system until I disabled Redhat's update notification tool.   I almost went back to SuSE7.3.  But, all seems to be ok now.

Well, right now, it's the official OS of all new Amigas.

I'm currently running RH8.0 as my first fully functional Linux setup (have tried other distro's over time,  but never got them setup proberly.)

So i'm curios, if mandrake9 is better than RH8.   i've gotten used to linux now, so i'm interested in the better distro.  even so much that i have considered byolinux.org.

Any pointers i need?
