Title: ...confused...
Post by: captainmoomoo on June 27, 2004, 09:08:31 PM
Hmmmm, I just saw the prices of Pegasos hardware on www.vesalia.de, and now im in a real fix - i can get a G4/1GHz motherboard for less then 400GBP, while an AmigaOne motherboard is gonna cost me significantly more. The price of the microA1 better be right when it comes out, and its feature-set pretty compelling, or else I will have to sacrifice the fantasy of running AmigaOS 4, and opt for a Pegasos with MorphOS instead...

Last thing I heard, MicroA1 was more expensive than the A1.

MorphOS will do everything you want from a PPC AmigaOS anyway, and probably better.

After careful consideration I've decided to go with a Pegasus as my next computer, there's alot of contributing factors aside from cost - mostly involving the bundled software (and upgrade prices to full versions) and the direction of ongoing Morphos development.  This will be towards the end of the summer though, when I'll have enough money to do it right.

Any comments on A1 pricing are speculation at the mo, until they arrive at the resellers they could go either way.

thats another thing that concerns me - will OS4 have the software to warrant it being my primary platform for computing? and im talking about modern applications, not old emulated stuff (although im not sure if MorphOS fares too well in this department)

also, iv read in a few places that the amigaone hardware is buggy and does not work well with linux, and any solutions at the moment are simply workarounds. this is important to me, as i would need linux to run properly (as this is the OS that I use primarily now). also, a good linux setup would then allow me to run MacOnLinux

If you have classic Amiga with PPC accelerator you can still have an AmigaOS 4.

yes, but it wouldnt run any where near as fast as on an amigaone. plus, as im running winuae on a fast pc, i dont need a classic amiga anymore (a towered 1260 which i have since sold)...

Ehm... if that is you're look on things then do what you need to do. I wouldn't concider selling of my classic machines just because there is WinUAE to run my software... there's just not the same feeling.

Same goes for A1 vs Peg... Peg doesn't have a soul and MOS, although it can run some Amiga software, isn't AmigaOS.

I see. Well, I can give only biased recommendations.

Excuse me for being ignorant, but could someone please tell me if ANY
software at all is being made for AmigaOS 4 and hence the AmigaOne?

It seems to me that not enough is being done to publicise the 3rd
party support (or even 1st party if such an entity exists).

I'm all for this new AmigaOS 4 and I don't believe Pegasos should
exist if it's making a crossroads in an already fragmented community.
Diversity is one thing, seperatism and sectarianism is another.

Although the thought of AmigaOS 4 running on a Pegasos hardware sounds
more reliable.

Here's one from the top of my head (and only trough hearsay), Hollywood should come in a speedy OS4/PPC version.

I know what you mean Brian, a PC running Amiga software feels almost right, but not totally so...

That's why I've still kept my old A500 (my first ever computer). Although, most of my games work on WinUAE, having the A500 provides me with the reassuring feeling that its still in my life. i know, its weird...

but as far as running OS 3.X is concerned, it runs so much better on a modern PC with WinUAE. The A1260 was just gathering dust because i never used it as it was too slow, so I thought I might as well get as much cash out of it as possible. cash that i could put towards a brand new PPC based Amiga/Pegasos

but now i dnt know. should i wait to see how the market pans out, or should i take the plunge. if i plunge, which way should i jump? amigaone, pegasos, or something else (like a nice new mac)?

There's bound to be some.

Kind word of advice: don't flog a dead horse. The discussion about red and blue is pointless, and over and done with. Accept that there are two platforms, each with their own good and bad points. It's sad that there is a split in the already minute Amiga community, but that's what you get with overzealous fanboys.

First tell us what exactly it is you see as a 'killer app'. Then, realise that killer apps for stock PC hardware---even if the 'PC' is in fact running a PowerPC CPU---do no longer exist. If you can run it on one machine, you can run it on another.

A good price from Eyetech?. if Eyetech sell it, then it will definitely be overpriced - their price lists speak for themselves.

If you want to go down the official route then you will have no choice but to pay the Eyetech TAX, best thing to do though is go and find people local(ish) with a Peg/A1, play on them and it will help you decide on one or the other (or even non of them).

yeah, i know what u mean - i just dont get that - how can you possible justify charging such a high premium for bog standard pc components? i mean, a 80GB hdd for 100GBP?! that is a serious serious joke. i can pick up a nice maxtor 160GB hdd from ebuyer.com for a little over 50pounds plus vat

Pagestream and ImageFX are definately being done for A1, those plus Papyrus Office for MOS too (these three plus basic Internet is what I need to replace my PC).  It looks like any of the big (for Amiga) players are doing OS4 and MOS versions of stuff so far, and will see what sells more to decide future development.

The Peg comes with Linux and MOL chucked in too, though that doesn't really matter to me personally.  From what people have said the Peg is very good with Linux, and runs about a half-dozen different flavours without problems.

With OS4 yet to be finished it's too early to tell which will be the best rounded system, I'll just be going to Peg as it's got/getting everything I want (which isn't much ;-)).

I agree.
But I heard that MorphOS will run on a Mac.
I really want this to happen. I get a future of Amiga development/software on my primary computer. Excellent.

Keep up the good work Genesi, and may Eyetech and Hyperion be ashamed for no market presence whatsoever.
I'm not biased either - If I was into this big divide I would certianly be in the red camp.
But its nothing to do  with it, its just fact.
Genesi are doing a much better job.

Yeah, but I doubt it could utilize Mac hardware in full.

It is definently worth buying a pegy. Why not DO SO TODAY ;-)

Just imagine how an AmigaOS type OS would absolutely zoom along with 1GHz. Heck, it fly's on my G3@600

Imagine the applications you will be running.

Think about running some of your favorite apps on that thing.

Now ... go out and buy one of those beasts!!
