Octamed suggestions wanted
« on: July 07, 2007, 08:47:36 AM »
Ever since 1994 I use Octamed V5 to make music with samples or thrue MIDI to one of my keyboards/synthersizers. It just a hobby, but.....
I don't have the BIG part of the tutorials about octamed. Is there a way to increase the amount of playable MIDI sounds? I use a Yamaha PSR-540 (XG) and Octamed allows only 128 different 'sounds' to select.
mmmm, I can not access all the sounds available!
Is this normal?
Just like with the memory issue: On my Amiga 1200 HD I can only play/load samples not larger than 2 MB. I have the Turbocard PhaseIV MK3 with 64 MB on it, with SCSI. Is there a way to access this memory to play/use more samples?

great help asked!:idea:

You can't play mods>2Mb 'cause the program puts the archive in chip memory (where Paula can read it) as default. Don't know if there is workaround for this issue.
Goodbye people.

I\'ll pop on from time to time, RL is acting up.

I might be wrong, but I thought OctaMED SoundStudio had options to put samples in Fast RAM? If so, I wonder whether this might allow >2MB samples? As for the patch selection, 128 sound banks is standard MIDI. I imagine OctaMED is hard coded to use the MIDI standard, so any patches beyond patch # 128 will not be accessible.

Thinking again about this, putting the sample in Fast RAM would allow you to use more than 2MB of samples, but each sample would still have to be less than 2MB in size since it would have to be copied back to Chip RAM before it will be acessible by Paula.

I suggest this: playing without knowing how to play an instrument

This is making music! And this is fun!
Thank u 4 this motivating issue!

doesn't it allow bank select for midi instruments on v5?

if not you might have to manually send midi messages in your tracks, if that don't work then I've got no idea
I\'m back and I brought bacon.

@ElZorro,

Octamed Soundstudio (V7?) has been a free download for many years now. I would suggest using that instead of V5. Like others here said, it allows you to move your samples to fast ram which was a big thing in my world! Its a check box in the far left pull down menu.

On the midi question, I've only used it for simple Sync stuff so I dont know.
 :oops:

Greetings,

I am interested in this thread, I have an Amiga 1200/68030 wanting to play with Octamed and others.

Number 1 were is the best place to download the latest free version?  Haven't had great luck finding it on Aminet.

Number 2 I am just going out my composite out into my TV for now since I don't have a Commodore monitor and can't afford to bid enough to win a scandoubler on ebay (and didn't see the thread on here with the guy selling them in time).  In any case every version of med I have downloaded and ran bumps the scan rate and or resolution to something my TV doesn't like.

And lastly, I just won a Perfect Sound digitizer on ebay.  Can I sample right into Med or do I need to use some other sample software, and then import the samples into Med?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I hope everyone is doing well!

@wlfrancis,

Go to Soundstudio

and click the Amiga version. You have to join the mailing list to download the latest version.

Octamed is going to kill your eyes on a TV!. You can use a regular PC monitor if you have a RGB-VGA adaptor ( I think Amigakit.com has them) . I think you can still get these pretty cheap. you have to put the DBLPAL or DBLNTSC and VGAonly monitor drivers in your devs drawer to get these screenmodes. At this point you should also have your composite out still hooked to the TV just in case a program opens its own screenmode.

Octamed will open on the same screenmode as workbench.

As far as the sampler, unless you have a program like Soundprobe your going to be stuck with the original software that came with the sampler. I could be wrong about this though? Anyone? :-D

Sample Wrench ( http://www.dissidents.com/demos.htm#DDAmiga ) might support sampling through the Perfect Sound ... Plus, if the Perfect Sound is a "standard" parallel port sampler (meaning it is very, very basic -- some are, some are not) then it will work with any Amiga software that supports basic parallel samplers.

I have a Perfect Sound also (though I favor my GVP DSS-8) and I believe I have used it with ProTracker in "generic parallel sampler" mode.  I may have used it in OctaMED before too.  And, in fact, I may have even used the Perfect Sound with GVP's DSS-8 software.

Octamed Soundstudio has it`s own sampling software, under "digitize" (or something) menu.  However I always found it a little hissy, and usually reverted to the sampler`s own software.

@trilobyte,

Thanks for the link!. I've never even heard of SampleWrench before. I'm going to give it a try. I have a Megalosound parallel sampler here. Its always worked great with Soundprobe, but I might give it a try with this.

@spihunter!

Can you tell me where to download Octamed SoundStudio V7 (higher than v5) with the useable manuel and extra's ?
:-?
I also need a good example (or manuel) how to set the Blizzard 1230 in the best way to use it's 64mb fastmemory to load bigger samples (I've tried this before in another thread but could not find the right direction/answer)
Maybe with drawings or an telletubie word document so I can read it like it is!
I am not so technical as I look like, you know!
 :-D
Do I also need to know which programme(s) I need to use full memory abilities?

please tell me :idea:
