This topic reminded me of my own high pitched whine on my Commodore 1084S (not 1084S-D1) monitor back in the day, so I thought I should reply, to tell everyone what cured it, in case that helps.

I bought my Amiga A500 package from Silica Shop while my Dad was dying of Cancer in hospital. He never returned home. It came with both the Tenstar Games Pack (including Barbarian by Palace, Mercenary, Insanity Fight, Amegas, and Ikari Warriors) and Photon Paint. It was delivered in a van in some cardboard boxes marked ATARI! After setting it up, I noticed a high pitched noise coming from the monitor. I think this was going on all the time, but it wasn't that noticeable, almost ultrasonic and I just put up with it. The monitor also had one dead pixel.

Several months later, after my Dad died, I moved out of the family home into my first flat, because my Mum was planning to move to a very remote area, so I needed to get my own home in London or be assimilated, meaning lose my whole identity. This involved most of my belongings being loaded into a small van, then being driven from SE London to NE London. The flat was on the first floor, up a short flight of stairs.

After setting up my Amiga in my new flat, I discovered that the high pitched whine had permanently stopped!

Of course, there are no new Commodore 1084S monitors nowadays, but this might just help someone who owns one of these monitors which has a high pitched whine.

Unfortunately I don’t know with FS-UAE. In Win-UAE you can easily mount up a CF card with a Amiga RDB and boot up from it in the settings. I’ve done that a few times.

Worth having a look on the FS-UAE support page.

Unfortunately, this doesn't help me because I'm not running Windows. I don't want to run Windows again after all the nasty experiences I've had with it. I might try running Win-UAE under WINE on macOS, though. Windows won't run on Macs without some software called Bootcamp, because Macs don't have a PC type BIOS. Macs can boot up from Linux drives without any additional software, though. I also own a Raspberry Pi, so I could try reading my CF card on that under Linux using the same CF to USB card reader.

I tried to add the SFS formatted CF card as an HDD in FS-UAE, but it couldn't be detected. I think the key may be to define it by typing something somewhere in FS-UAE, but I don't know what to type or where.

I think a possible solution may be to buy another SSD and install Linux on it, then install FS-UAE and do what I need to do using a Mac. I think the problem is caused by Linux supporting every known format, but macOS not supporting them all.

According to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amiga_rigid_disk_block an SFS formatted disk does have an RDB. Of course, I've already checked the FS-UAE support page.

You could test with the following:

What type of joystick is it by the way?

As  posted in another thread I'm trying to install a driver for an Aiptek Hyperpen 6000 graphics tablet. Unfortunately, one problem doing this is that I can't read or write either of two CF cards on my MacBook and I can't currently copy the driver using a FAT32 CF card either.

The two CF cards I've got are in different formats. One is in SFS format and was installed by me in 2015 after buying it formatted from Amigakit. I know I used Linux to install Workbench 3.0 and lots of other software onto it, but now I can't remember what I did and I haven't got a computer running Linux at the moment. The other card is in the PFS3 format, but I bought it containing lots of software from a well known seller on eBay.

How can I set up my MacBook, which is now running macOS Ventura and may soon by running Sonoma, to read the SFS format CF card? So far, I've installed FS-UAE, then copied the SFS filing system file into the Workbench 3.0 Boot floppy disk L directory, but it still won't detect the CF card.

Unfortunately I don’t know with FS-UAE. In Win-UAE you can easily mount up a CF card with a Amiga RDB and boot up from it in the settings. I’ve done that a few times.

Worth having a look on the FS-UAE support page.

Amiga Marketplace / Re: AmigaDeals.com: New Webstore Open
« Last post by amigakit on March 28, 2024, 07:49:09 PM »
Hello

The webstores operate on different engines and in differing ways.  For example, Amiga Deals permits guest checkouts.  It also provides differing ways of paying.   The hosting location is separated which is important if one server has down time.   They may offer differing promotions in future too.

Thanks for your interest in our products and your past custom.  We appreciate it.

Hi @amigakit ,
Please can you highlight the differences / USPs of the different web stores now in operation (Amigakit, Amiga Deals and amigastore.com)? I've spotted some slightly different pricing and options between Amigakit and Amiga Deals e.g. the A1200 4GB CF card and IDE adapter is £19.99 on Amigakit with the option of adding Personal Paint for an extra cost, but £19.95 on Amigadeals without the option.

Thank you.

(@everyone, this isn't an opportunity to start a flame war; I genuinely want to know the benefits of the different web stores)

Amiga Magazines / Re: Old Amiga Future Issue 142 in german & english now online
« Last post by AndreasM on March 28, 2024, 04:12:53 PM »
articles about creating artwork for me... unfortunately I don't know anything about that.

We have actually already considered whether the Amiga Future should be made German and English in one issue. But if we want to have the same content we would need 120 pages. That would mean that the magazine would be almost twice as expensive and the shipping costs would also double. (Shipping costs also depend on weight.). That's why that's not an option for now.

Medicopter 117... urgs ;)

This is great news! I'll read some of them later today. Can you point out any with articles about creating artwork for me?

BTW, I think it would be a good idea if every issue of Amiga Future was published in a bilingual edition instead of one edition in German and one edition in English. My native language is English and my parents and grandparents couldn't really speak any other languages. This would help monolingual isolationists to learn computer terms such as "Festplatine", "Speicher", "Tastatur", "Platine", "Bildschirm"and "Steckkarte", as well as to read German text in demos. I originally learnt these terms from issues of "Amiga Magazin", which wasn't available in the UK. People can find archived copies of this on https://www.kultmags.com/mags.php?folder=QW1pZ2EgTWFnYXppbg== , but there are also a few other German Amiga magazines on https://www.kultmags.com/mags.php

If people want to find some very detailed books about the Amiga, then look on https://www.retrozone.ch/amiga/books/ I must point out that AFAIK no Amiga books by the company Markt & Technik have ever been translated into English.

Now I'm just going to watch another episode of the German action rescue drama series "Medicopter 117" online from the channel RTLUp! This is also available via satellite from the Astra 1 position at 19.2 degrees east.
