Crap. Dead powertower :(
« on: March 21, 2007, 12:37:17 AM »
I think I just nuked my powertower. I got my replacement PPC fan in, hooked it up to the power supply, and now it boots but the BPPC card is no good. I booted up w/o a startup-seq. and it complained about no memory when i tried to run whichamiga. Any ideas on what to do? I'm really upset at the moment :(

I can empathize! Take a deep breath! When something like this happens, your emotions really keep you from thinking clearly. You need to think about what might have happened.

I really am not familiar with this rig, are we talking about the Blizzard PPC card? I took a look over on BBOAH; I see the fan is not cooling the CPU. What is it cooling?

Was this thing working when you discovered you needed a replacement fan?

Have you been taking anti-static precautions?

Sounds like the 1200 boots but not the PPC card, correct?

Try removing the PPC card, uninstalling any driver software that it takes and re-installing the hardware & software from scratch.

If you can give more info, someone might have more ideas. Maybe someone with hands on experience with this hardware.

Good Luck!

The BPPC has a cooler very similar to modern day GPU heatsinks. There is a sealed cover over the entire heatsink which directs airflow. The fan is on the underside of the board but connected to the output of the cooler.

Look at this photo where the heatsink has been removed

http://amigahardware.mariomisic.de/download_photos/blizzppc040_front_big.jpg

The heatsink touches the CPU, has a network of channels that lead to that big hole. That is where the fan goes on the other side of the board.

To fit the new fan I take it you had to remove the board from the A1200 motherboard??

Check that the connection between the A1200 and BPPC is good.

Check that non of the removable components (crystals etc.) have come loose.

Yeah. I've tried making sure everything is snug. I even tried another accelerator. I can't deal with this anymore :( Sucks but I am going to sell my system, try to reinstall wb3.5 and see what happens tonight.

@pan1k

If the computer doesn't recognise ram on the Blizzard PPC, then try to reflash it.

I had a setup in for repair once, which didn't work correctly. The ram on the Blizzard PPC couldn't be seen, so the computer couldn't be used because of all the software installed quickly drained the 2 MB chip ram, and left the boot process hanging. A reflash cured it.

Seing that you tried another accelerator indicates that this isn't the problem though, so maybe faulty ram modules?

there is also the controller chips..my BlizzPPC also stop seeing fast ram & reflash also did nothing..

but i re_soldered all the legs of the controller chips & it all started to work again ( this was before there had a heatsink on them..

so one of the chip must have got so hot it de-soldered one or two legs..

-------------
power is nothing without control

I don't know. I will try to reflash it, but i'm going to end up selling the system more than likely. Thanks for the tip tho!

Don't sell. Persevere and you will resolve it.

So this board has two CPUs on it? I guess the other one is a 680x0 of some sort. I didn't realize that last night.

Hi there

I have the same issue with my Blizzard PPC - It says its working (when I hold down both mouse buttons) but detects no Fast RAM. I've tried flashing, and whilst it reflashes successfully it doesn't fix the missing Fast Ram

Can you tell me what legs / chips you resoldered please so I can try this?

Many thanks
